White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt sparked confusion on social media after a remark she made during an April 22 press briefing.

While answering questions from reporters, Leavitt appeared to suggest she is no longer part of President Donald Trump’s “political team.”

Karoline Leavitt says she's not part of Trump’s political team

During the press briefing, Leavitt was asked about Virginia’s redistricting referendum, when her response to the question drew unexpected attention. A reporter asked why President Donald Trump had not campaigned more actively against the measure or used Truth Social to urge voters to reject it.

One reporter asked Leavitt, “On the issue of Virginia redistricting, as he weighed in this afternoon, why didn't he campaign more actively against this referendum? Why not spend time on Truth Social encouraging people vote no before the vote?” To which, she replied, “That's a question that's political by nature.”

Leavitt then added, “As you know, I'm not part of the President's political team anymore. I do sit here at the White House as a government employee.” The comment drew immediate attention but Leavitt continued answering the question without elaborating on what she meant

“Look, the president has a lot on his plate, a lot on his schedule. He did host a telephone call prior to the election, the night before, but he's made his position on the results of this election clear today," she added. Now, her comment about serving as just a government employee has made its rounds on the internet.

Netizens React to Leavitt's Baffling Remarks

Shortly after the clip circulated, social media users began questioning what the remark meant, noting that Leavitt had previously fielded political questions without hesitation. Some observers suggested she might be trying to distance herself from Trump.

One user asked, “Wait…did I miss the part where she was fired? Isn’t Press Secretary a political position? Is she not Press Secretary anymore? What did I miss?”

“So you're telling me the White House Press Secretary isn't going to answer any more political questions? What is she supposed to talk about then? The weather?" another wondered.

A user wrote, “Ummm what? Not part of his political team? Your his press secretary and he runs his admin by posts, so you don't get to separate the two.”

One comment read, “Too late to distance urself now…you've been peddling his lies all year.” Another user wrote, “What a complete bobblehead… Another example of people in this Administration not qualified for the job they have.”

As the clip circulated on X, Leavitt faced critical reactions, accusing her of attempting to separate herself from the administration after previously defending it. The reactions reflected broader skepticism among some users about Leavitt's handling of the role.

As of publication, the White House had not issued any statement addressing the remark or indicating a change in Leavitt's role.
