Angel Reese discussed her controversial opinion with Michelle Obama
WNBA Player Angel Reese Would Rather ‘Catch a Fine’ Than Face the Media Under the New CBA
WNBA star Angel Reese recently opened up about her experiences both on and off the court. After being traded from the Chicago Sky to the Atlanta Dream in April 2026, she sat down with Michelle Obama on her podcast.
During the conversation, Reese shared how she has felt treated unfairly by fans and the media. While speaking honestly about the pressure and criticism she has received over the years, the athlete shared a controversial move she’s willing to make rather than face reporters.
Angel Reese Would Pay $10K Fine to Skip the Media
Appearing on a podcast with Michelle Obama, Angel Reese touched upon the topic of how she feels about reporters and her desperation to avoid them after games. Speaking from experience that made her feel uncomfortable and judged, Reese shared her frustration with the media.
Reflecting on how the “media has not always been great” to her, Reese added that she would “catch a fine” instead of facing questions when she feels under pressure. Meanwhile, the former First Lady seemed to nod and respond in agreement with the WNBA star.
“The media has not always been great for me. And I'll take a fine. I'll catch a fine, especially in the WNBA. I'll have a fine before I have to go to media and feel like my back is against the wall," Reese said.
Meanwhile, under the WNBA’s new collective bargaining agreement, athletes are required to be available for media after games. The rule was part of a recent deal aimed at improving player salaries and conditions.
If players don't comply and skip these media sessions, they can face penalties. Reports suggest that fines can even reach up to $10,000, for not being available for an interview with the reporters. This makes Reese’s stance both costly and controversial.
Michelle Obama's Brother Sided With the WNBA Player
Michelle Obama’s brother praises Angel Reese
Following her comments, Angel Reese received public support from Michelle Obama's brother and former college basketball player, Craig Robinson, during the podcast. Being well aware of the media treatment that athletes face, Robinson sided with Reese’s comments.
He even said that sports media often tries to create unnecessary drama, like reality TV, just to entertain the audience. “Sports is like reality TV. The media wants to manufacture some stuff.” Robinson sided with the WNBA star’s concerns.
He further added, “And I just want you to know that I noticed how you’ve handled yourself and it has been absolutely with aplomb.” Robinson praised how Reese has handled criticism, saying he has noticed her composure.
