‘Took It Too Far’: Russell Brand Takes a Dig at Ex-Wife Katy Perry's Rumored Justin Trudeau Romance
Actor Russell Brand recently appeared on The Megyn Kelly Show and opened up about his marriage to former wife Katy Perry.
The comedian blended humor with honest reflection to discuss where things exactly went wrong for him and Perry, and the role he played in it.
In addition, Brand didn’t hold back while reflecting on the pop star's rumored relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
After Perry and Trudeau were recently spotted living the “teenage dream” at Coachella, Brand shared his opinion on their alleged romance.
'Fidel Castro's Spawn'
Russell Brand speaks about former wife Katy Perry’s alleged romance with Justin Trudeau.
Appearing on The Megyn Kelly Show to discuss his new book How to Become a Christian in 7 Days, Brand took the opportunity to share his opinion on Perry.
Brand began by describing the singer as “really, really lovely,” while claiming to have no issues with her past relationship with actor Orlando Bloom.
However, Brand spiced up the discussion as he joked about Perry's rumored romance with the Trudeau.
He said, “I put up with a lot with that ex-wife of mine, but you took it too far, KP… Orlando Bloom, I love that guy. Brilliant. Justin Trudeau, though, potentially Fidel Castro's spawn. No, there we draw the line.”
Further, referring to Trudeau as "a child G*d”, the comedian went on to criticize the politician’s decisions as Canada's prime minister.
Brand slammed Trudeau for the way he handled the trucker protests related to COVID-19 vaccine mandates in Canada.
“I did not like that Trudeau. No, he's a child of G*d and he's beloved. But what I will say is I didn't like it when he was having a go at them truckers… He does have fantastic hair,” Brand said.
Further, he also questioned the authenticity of what he called “good-looking politicians”.
Brand explained, “I specifically don't like what is typified by those good-looking politicians, [Barack] Obama, [Emmanuel] Macron, [Tony] Blair. They're sort of good-looking and they're charming. But you think, who do you work for really? Who's running this? Because it can't be you.”
He added, “And I don't like that sort of pose of compassion that's absolutely undergirded by selfishness, probably because I recognize it myself. I'm so selfish sometimes.”
Brand concluded his remarks about Perry and Trudeau on a lighter note as he joked that his ex-wife might "come to her senses at any minute."
Russell Brand Reflects on His Past Mistakes
Brand further discussed what he said were mistakes he made during his marriage to Perry.
The couple was married from 2010 to 2012, and Brand admitted he did not handle that phase of his life well.
Claiming to be intimidated by her stardom, he confessed to feeling insecure which influenced many of his decisions at the time.
“I pushed to get married early because I felt inadequate and insecure and like I wasn't enough and that if I was married to her, I would somehow be a better person and more important. And that put her under an unnecessary amount of pressure and strain,” he told host Megyn Kelly.
Looking back, Brand praised Perry’s “innocence,” and called her “a very beautiful person.”
He also noted, “She's also incredibly driven and worked really, really hard. Here's me taking total responsibility for all the mistakes I made in that marriage. I felt like I was inadequate and not enough on my own.”
Brand revealed that he refused to speak to Perry after informing her of his decision to divorce.
However, he noted, “I stay in touch with her father, Keith, and her mother, Mary, because they're good Christian folks.”
