New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani introduced his "Preliminary Citywide Racial Equity Plan" on Monday, which is set to focus on racial equity across the city. The plan aims to reduce gaps between different communities and improve fairness in areas like housing, jobs, and education.

It comes as a preliminary report, which the mayor had promised to release within 100 days in office. However, after the report was released, the plan drew strong reactions, especially from conservative voices. At the same time, a top official from President Donald Trump’s Justice Department said the proposal will be reviewed.

Zohran Mamdani Has Released His Preliminary Report

In a press release, Zohran Mamdani’s office said the preliminary report highlights clear gaps in housing, education, and income across different communities in the city. Therefore, Mamdani has shared more details about his new racial equity plan, saying it focuses on real problems people face every day.

The New York City Mayor’s office insisted that the new plan aims to "establish a new framework for how New York City measures affordability, understands inequity and plans for a more equitable future.”

“The True Cost of Living Measure offers an honest account of what it actually costs to live in this city — and who is being left behind. It shows that this is not a crisis affecting a small minority of New Yorkers. It is a crisis touching the vast majority of our city, in every borough and every neighborhood," Mamdani said.

He continued, “But we know this crisis is not felt equally. Black and Latino New Yorkers — who have been pushed out of this city for decades — are bearing the brunt. The Preliminary Racial Equity Plan is where we begin to reverse that pattern.”

“These reports make one thing clear: we cannot tackle systemic racial inequity without confronting the affordability crisis head-on, and we cannot solve the cost-of-living crisis without dismantling systemic racial inequity.”

Mamdani stressed that the impact is not the same for everyone. He said Black and Latino residents have been hit the hardest and have been pushed out of the city over many years. So the mayor added that the plan is a first step toward fixing these issues.

Zohran Mamdani’s plan faces backlash from conservatives

However, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s announcement quickly faced criticism from conservative voices and members of the Trump administration. Despite his attempt to bring racial equity across the city, conservatives stated that the plan must be reviewed before it's brought into action.

Harmeet Dhillon, a top official in the Justice Department, reacted on X, saying the plan “sounds fishy/illegal. Will review!”. Further, people raised concerns about race-based policies and government spending, which the administration has been trying to reduce since taking power last year.

In addition, a popular conservative account Libs of TikTok called the plan “straight-up racism against White people” in a post online, while conservative commentator Paul A. Szypula similarly criticized the move.

“The reality is Mamdani is implementing blatantly racist policies that reward and punish people based on their skin color,” Szypula wrote, explaining how he believes the plan promotes unfair treatment by rewarding or punishing people based on their skin color.
