Melania Trump Shares Rare Details About Barron’s Childhood

With Mother's Day around the corner, Melania Trump opened up and shared some intimate family details about Barron Trump's childhood. She also spoke about her late mother's influence on her son and described the "magical" bond they shared while he grew up mostly out of the public's eye.

The first lady, who is known for guarding her family's privacy, answered written questions from USA TODAY about motherhood, growing up in Slovenia, and the role her parents played in raising Barron.

A lot of the interview focused on Barron's childhood and the family traditions that Melania said helped keep him connected to his Slovenian heritage even though he grew up in New York.

“My mother was the epitome of love and warmth, and for Barron, a grandmother who filled every moment with joy and wisdom,” Melania wrote. “Every story she read to Barron sparked his imagination, and every game they played strengthened their bond.”

She also described the relationship between Amalija Knavs and her grandson as personal and intimate.

“Their connection was so magical,” Melania said. “And I loved watching it.”

Melania shared that her only son Barron spoke Slovenian to his grandmother, and that they also bonded through food, books, games, and family rituals. Knavs made sure that he had a "strong connection to his Slovenian roots."

“Both speaking the same language allowed them to communicate deeply and meaningfully,” she explained.

Melania's heritage was important to her and her family, and she made sure to share it with her son.

Melania showed a softer side to her personality, sharing her parenting philosophy, and felt that protecting their individuality and independence was particularly important.

“To all the young mothers out there: Shower your children with love and support and always communicate openly,” she wrote.

She added, “See them as their own unique individuals, not merely as extensions of yourself.”

Melania's encouragement is gold, especially when considering how little she has shared about her family life, particularly Barron who she has shielded from the media.

Amlija Knavs worked as a children's clothing designer and patternmaker, and the first lady revealed that her mother's work influenced her own career and style. Melania said that she appreciated fashion and creativity form an early age.

“Her passion for design and meticulous attention to detail inspired my deep appreciation for creativity and craftsmanship,” Melania wrote.

Early in her career, Melania worked as an international model after leaving her home country. She became an American citizen in 2006 and later became first lady when Donald Trump became president.

The Mother's Day message offers a clear look into Melania Trump's private family. She shared the quieter moments that helped shape Barron, focusing on memory, heritage, and parenting, and provided insight into what life was like behind closed doors as her son grew up.
