The first lady, who built a career in modeling, is often seen in a composed smile. Her late mother showed a similar expression in images taken during public appearances, presenting a consistent and polished expression.
Other features also appear similar in side-by-side comparisons, including nose shape and overall facial structure. In some photographs, Melania appears with darker hair, both appear with dark hair tones. The connection is also reflected in Melania’s early life and career path.
Mrs. Trump grew up in Sevnica, Slovenia, where the Knavs family lived before her move into modeling. Her mother worked in a clothing factory and played a role in introducing her daughter to the fashion world. According to First Ladies: "When [her textile company] enlisted young girls as informal models for their latest children's fashions, Amalija arranged for Melanija to walk the runway."
This experience marked an early step in her modeling career, which later expanded across Europe. During that time, she was introduced to Paolo Zampolli, who later reportedly connected her with Donald Trump.

Amalija and Viktor Knavs later moved to the United States, where they spent time at Trump Tower and Mar-a-Lago while maintaining ties to Slovenia. During Trump’s presidency, they stayed at the White House for periods of time and were involved in helping care for Barron Trump.
The family often communicated in Slovenian. Journalist Mary Jordan, author of The Art of Her Deal, said in a 2020 CBS interview: "There's a unit within the family unit, and it's Melania, her mother, her father and Barron. And they all speak Slovenian." In 2023, Amalija’s health declined.
During that time, the first lady stayed with her and did not attend Christmas events at Mar-a-Lago that year. Amalija passed away shortly afterward.
