Trump Faces Online Scrutiny for Calling Son Barron 'Little Boy' During Mother’s Day Speech
President Donald Trump hosted a Mother's Day celebration in the White House's East Room on Wednesday, May 6, where he praised First Lady Melania Trump.
However, the president’s speech garnered attention for a comment he made about his son, Barron Trump.
Netizens React to Donald Trump's Remarks
Donald Trump talks about Melania Trump and Barron Trump.
Trump sparked online reactions after referring to his youngest son, Barron, as a “little boy,” during his speech as part of the Mother’s Day celebrations.
The president appreciated Melania for all she has done as the first lady and as a mother to their son, Barron.
“I want to thank you, Melania. It’s amazing the job you have done. Most importantly, to her, she’s done an incredible job as first lady, and she’s an incredible mom,” Trump said.
He then brought up Barron in his speech, saying, “She has a little boy who’s quite tall. He’s a little boy to us, but quite tall, right?”
Trump continued, “And he’s great, Barron. She takes great care of him and thank you. Great mom.”
Soon, these remarks went viral online, with many social media users commenting about Trump’s way of addressing his adult son.
Several netizens him for infantilizing his 20-year-old son, at the White House.
“He’s a grown adult man that could be his grandchild or great-grandchild. He clearly does not know that’s his child,” one user wrote on Threads.
Another added, “Does he know Melania’s son is an adult?” An individual stated, “He doesn’t know his kid is 20 years old.”
One user wrote on X, "You wouldn’t know he’s talking about his own son." "Isn’t the little boy ‘their’ child and he is 20 years old?" asked one individual.
Another user commented, “This is not the first nor the second time he said that she has a son, referring that he isn’t the father; however, it’s undeniable with his looks.”
The Trumps Have Sparked Separation Rumors in the Past
Trump and Melania's relationship has been a topic of discussion in the past as well.
In early 2026, People magazine reported that the couple spends very little time together and mostly follows separate schedules.
A source said, “There is little interaction between them, just what is expected. Then they go back to doing their own thing.”
Reflecting on the time the duo was seen enjoying the New Year together at Mar-a-Lago, insiders noted, “Melania was happy and enjoying the night while the president looked bored and tired, but was nice to the guests and wishing them well.”
Following this reported statement, a White House Spokesperson responded, “President Trump and the entire administration work 24/7 for the American people to deliver on the promise to Make America Great Again. The Trump Family is the most successful family of all time.”
Sources also noted that the Trumps “have quarters in the White House,” but the first lady “leads her own life and joins him when appropriate.”
This was somewhat in line with what Michael Wolff had told the Daily Beast Podcast in May 2025. He had alleged that the president and the first lady were effectively “separated” and “live separate lives.”
However, the White House had debunked Wolff’s claims calling him a “lying sack of s–t.”
