'I Don't Really Own Any': Usha Vance's MAGA Hat Comment Draws Scrutiny as Viewers Question Her Loyalty
The Indian-American second lady of the United States, Usha Vance, has often been perceived by many viewers as calm, composed, and an easy-to-relate-to individual. Despite being the wife of Vice President JD Vance, her measured persona has drawn favorable comparisons to her husband.
A recent interview, however, has prompted some viewers to question her political loyalties. After she was asked about a MAGA hat, Usha's response sparked debate over whether she had been fully transparent or simply tried to protect her image and avoid controversy.
Netizens react to Usha Vance's remark
An X post shows Usha Vance wearing different hats.
Usha recently appeared on NBC's Today show for an interview with journalist Kate Snow about her life and her upcoming podcast, Storytime With the Second Lady. However, as the conversation turned to politics, the situation took a turn.
During the interview, Snow asked her, “Do you own a MAGA hat?” To this, Usha responded, “I don’t really own any hats. I think I have a Disneyland hat.”The response quickly spread on social media, with many users questioning whether she was being straightforward.
Soon, social media users began sharing old photos of the 40-year-old wearing different hats, including sun hats and baseball caps at public events. According to many, Usha's comment seemed detached from her reality, and people started teasing and criticizing her for the same.
One user on X joked that she was “caught in 4K,” accusing her being dishonest, while others wrote, “Marry a liar (,) start lying too”. Another user added, “I don’t blame her for lying. She (is) obviously repulsed by Trump but has to hide her feelings. Of course her husband is also a repulsive person as well.”
'I’m not his staffer'

Amid growing questions about her political loyalty, another portion of the interview offered a clearer understanding of how she sees her role as the second lady. She firmly said during the interview, “I’m not a staffer”.
Her response indicated that she does not act as a political aide or spokesperson for her husband, JD Vance. She explained that she does not take part in his official decisions, and further hinted that the two hold differing views on some issues.
"Yeah, we — I mean — we have totally different backgrounds, right? You know, we have different starting points for thinking about all sorts of questions," she said.
Usha added, “I’m not his staffer. I’m not involved in this in any professional sense is that there is no expectation that we are going to see eye to eye on everything.” The 40-year-old shared that marriage does not mean both people must think the same way.
According to her, partners in a healthy relationship can have different opinions without having any friction. This statement particularly caught attention because of her past. Prior to supporting her Republican husband’s political path, Usha was once registered as a Democrat.
Later, she described herself as independent, indicating her views had shifted over time. Now, people are wondering if it truly has. Some believe she may still hold some of her earlier beliefs. Others think she is simply being careful with her words.
