British Prime Minister Keir Starmer might be “fed up” with how President Donald Trump is handling the situation in the Middle East, but he still hopped on to a phone call with the president.

After framing strong words against Trump and comparing him to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Starmer spoke to the 79-year-old over the phone.

According to Downing Street, despite previously accusing Trump’s Iran war of affecting people in Britain, Starmer spoke to Trump while in Qatar. “The Prime Minister spoke to President Trump from Qatar this evening,” a spokesman confirmed.

An X post mentions that Keir Starmer and Donald Trump spoke over the phone about the Iran war.

On Friday, April 10, while in Qatar, Starmer spoke with Trump over the phone. According to the Downing Street spokesman, as the call came at a tense time for the Middle East, the duo spoke about the need for a “practical plan” to get shipping going through the Strait of Hormuz.

During the call, Starmer shared details of his talks with Gulf leaders and military planners in the region, and also discussed military capabilities and logistics of moving vessels. He further stressed the need to resume safe and free movement of ships through the strait, which both leaders agreed on.

“The prime minister set out his discussions with Gulf leaders and military planners in the region on the need to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the U.K.'s efforts to convene partners to agree a viable plan,” the spokesman said.

“They agreed that now there is a ceasefire in place and agreement to open the strait, we are at the next stage of finding a resolution,” the spokesman said, adding, “The leaders discussed the need for a practical plan to get shipping moving again as quickly as possible. They agreed to speak again soon.”

'...Because of the Actions of Putin or Trump'

Keir Starmer shares his views on the actions of world leaders like Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, this phone call comes just hours after Starmer claimed to be “fed up” with Trump’s actions in the Iran war. Speaking to ITV’s Robert Peston on Thursday, April 9, Starmer noted how the president's actions have taken a toll on the British public.

“I’m fed up with the fact that families across the country see their bills go up and down on energy, businesses’ bills go up and down on energy because of the actions of Putin or Trump across the world,” Starmer said.

While comparing Trump to Putin, Starmer said families and businesses in the U.K. are seeing their energy bills go up and down because of the actions of the U.S. president. Meanwhile, his comments come after he faced criticism from Trump for not sending British forces to support the war involving Iran.

The prime minister insisted that the attacks should stop, making it clear that the issue is not about legal or technical details, but about doing the right thing. “That should stop – that’s my strong view – and therefore, the question isn’t a technical one of whether it’s a breach of the agreement or not,” Starmer said.
