Thousands of West Virginians are taking to social media over soaring electricity bills. They are displeased and clueless, wondering why their monthly utility costs are higher than their rents and mortgages, despite living in one of America's most energy-rich places.

In a new report, Associated Press journalist Margie Mason writes about Rebecca Michalski, a resident of West Virginia, whose electricity charges for February stood at $940.08.

Michalski reportedly had to get a loan to pay her bills on time after getting a cut-off notice during an extended arctic blast.

"Every time you see that power bill, you're just sick," Michalski told Mason. "I already know before I open it. I just dread seeing how much," she added.

Mason notes that electricity bills have continued to rise despite President Donald Trump's promise to reduce its costs by 50 percent during his 2024 campaign pitch.

But data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Price Index (CPI) points to a different reality.

Citing the index, Mason reported that compared to the previous year, in February 2026, the U.S. saw a 4.8 percent increase in electricity. Similarly, piped natural gas prices reportedly rose 10.9 percent.

Mason wrote that these prices surpassed inflation even before the U.S. and Israel launched a joint airstrike against Iran in late February, plunging the countries into war and increasing energy costs.

U.S. Adults 'Extremely' Concerned About High Energy Bills

According to the report, which cited an AP-NORC poll conducted in March, 35 percent of U.S. adults were "extremely" or "very" concerned about being able to afford electricity in the upcoming months.

Amid her struggles to cover electricity prices every month, Michalski told Mason that she does not support Trump anymore. "It's breaking me. And there's nothing that can be done for it, unless the president does something," she said. "And I don't see him doing it. He's had plenty of time."

Mason writes that several factors contribute to the rapidly increasing electricity bills, including increased demand, extreme weather and events, upgrading and maintaining aging infrastructure and rising natural gas prices.

Another factor contributing to the rising price of electricity is the increase in the number of data centers built for artificial intelligence and cloud computing in regions like West Virginia.

Democrats Address Rising Electricity Costs During Trump's Administration

Congressmembers, especially Democrats, have been addressing concerns about the growing cost of utilities on social media.

On April 6, Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA), who is serving as the House Minority Whip, took to X and called out Republicans for spending billions on Trump's U.S.-Iran War.

"Americans are struggling to make ends meet as gas prices, electricity bills and grocery costs soar," Clark wrote, adding, "While Republicans spend billions on Trump's reckless war and not a dime to make your life more affordable. You deserve better."

Katherine Clark calls out Republicans in a post on X for spending billions on the Iran war as Americans struggle to pay for utilities.

On April 8, Rep. Greg Stanton (D-AZ) announced that he is backing the Energy Bills Relief Act.

"Utility costs keep climbing — and Arizona families are paying the price," he said, before adding, "I'm backing the Energy Bills Relief Act to build more cheap renewable energy, bring down electricity costs, and make sure data centers don't push their operating costs onto families."

Will Trump's administration take necessary steps to address Americans' concerns over skyrocketing electricity bills? Only time will tell.
