Kanye West denied entry in the UK leading to the Wireless Festival cancellation
“Wireless Festival Is Canceled” After UK Denied Entry to Kanye West Over Antisemitic Remarks
U.S. rapper Kanye West was reportedly offered £11 million ($14 million) to headline Wireless Festival, but things did not go as planned. While West was set to perform for three nights, since his previous performance in 2014, he was eventually denied entry into the UK.
The UK Home Office rejected his travel request, saying his presence would not be good for the public. In addition, it was also revealed that despite applying to travel to the UK on Monday via an Electronic Travel Authorisation, West failed to acquire a valid ETA.
Live Nation Might Face $30M Loss After Kanye West Crisis
After the UK Home Office announced its decision to deny entry to Kanye West, the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke out about the situation. He said the rapper should “never have been invited to headline Wireless”.
“Kanye West should never have been invited to headline Wireless. This government stands firmly with the Jewish community, and we will not stop in our fight to confront and defeat the poison of antisemitism.” Starmer said.
Now following the big step, sources are saying that the decision by the UK Home Office has now created a huge problem for the festival. As per insiders, it has become “one of the biggest mess-ups since Covid”.
Meanwhile, although Live Nation, which runs Wireless, is expected to get its money back, the company is also facing strong criticism. A Daily Mail report revealed that Live Nation was initially warned about letting West headline.
However, they “didn’t listen” to the concerns about booking Kanye West, and went forward with it anyway. Right after their move, people got worried about letting the rapper perform so close to a large Jewish community.
Therefore, “stakeholders" were "consulted”, but their decision to ignore the warnings demonstrated how “arrogant and out of touch they are”.
Wireless Festival Canceled After West Was Denied Entry
Wireless released a statement about canceling the festival.
According to reports, after Kanye West, who goes by the stage name Ye, was announced to headline Wireless Festival, the UK government faced calls to ban him over his past antisemitic comments.
The controversy grew after he released a track titled “Heil Hitler” and promoted a swastika T-shirt on his website. Following this outrage, the UK Home Office decided to deny his entry into the country.
However, this move has now led to a major fallout for the Wireless Festival. The organisers have now confirmed that this year’s three-day event at Finsbury Park has been canceled, after West was denied entry into the UK.
Releasing a statement, Live Nation said refunds will be given to all ticket holders. In addition, they also added how they had spoken to stakeholders before booking Ye and claimed no concerns were raised at that time.
“The Home Office has withdrawn YE's ETA, denying him entry into the United Kingdom. As a result, Wireless Festival is canceled and refunds will be issued to all ticket holders.” The statement read.
“As with every Wireless Festival, multiple stakeholders were consulted in advance of booking YE and no concerns were highlighted at the time.” Live Nation further clarified that antisemitism is unacceptable, and forwarded West's apologies.
“Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent, and we recognise the real and personal impact these issues have had. As YE said today, he acknowledges that words alone are not enough, and in spite of this still hopes to be given the opportunity to begin a conversation with the Jewish community in the UK.”
