'That Was Not My Mentality' — Erika Kirk Reveals How Meeting Charlie Kirk Altered Her Life's Purpose

Life can change in a moment, and for Erika Kirk, everything changed the day she met Charlie Kirk. Before meeting Charlie, Erika’s world looked very different – the Scottsdale native was neck deep in her studies, earning degrees in political science, legal studies and Christian leadership.

Erika said that her life’s earlier chapter felt like a distant memory after meeting Charlie. The duo met at a job interview in 2018, bonded over their shared beliefs and tied the knot in 2021. However, their journey was tragically cut short in September 2025, when Charlie was shot dead at a Utah university.

Prior to meeting Charlie, the 37-year-old had built a strong and independent life. She graduated from Arizona State University in 2012 with a degree in political science and international relations.

Later, she continued her studies by earning a master’s degree in legal studies from Liberty University and a doctorate in education in Christian leadership. With a clear focus on how she wanted to grow in her career and make a difference, Erika pursued higher education.

In addition, the 37-year-old admitted that she did not think about marriage or starting a family before meeting Charlie. According to OK Magazine, she said that the idea of having a big family and a traditional life was not part of her plans back then. “I wanted to make it all-encompassing and find a way [to] help everyone in a unified way,” the Turning Point USA CEO said. “Before I met Charlie, I was not on the path of, ‘I want to have six kids and a white picket house fence. That was not my mentality,” she added.

Therefore, instead of building a family, she focused on helping others. The 37-year-old founded Everyday Heroes Like You in 2006, aiming to support people in meaningful ways. She even spent time volunteering at soup kitchens with her family.

Further, Erika gained attention after winning Miss Arizona USA in 2011. However, things changed in 2018 when she met Charlie during a job interview. As their connection grew, the duo ended up getting married in 2021.

The Kirks remained married for 4 years, having two kids together, until Charlie was assassinated in September 2025. However, the tragedy only made Erika stronger, leading her to make an emotional promise to continue his beliefs and the work he stood for, the 37-year-old said.

Speaking at the 10th annual Young Women’s Leadership Summit in 2025, Erika shared how deeply her life had changed after meeting him. She stated, “When you meet the right man, everything shifts. Everything changes. When I met Charlie, that was it.”

Erika also spoke about how their relationship changed her way of thinking and living. Now a mother of two who has embraced this lifestyle, the 37-year-old said, “It’s a different kind of love,” while speaking about her children and late husband.

At the same time, she said that she is learning to live with loss. She mentioned in an Instagram post, “there is no linear blueprint for grief.” Erika also noted how she tries to find happiness in her children and holds on to special memories with her family.
