Members of the British royal family are often expected to follow certain traditions when it comes to public appearances, including guidelines around dress and presentation. Over the years, several such conventions have been widely discussed, especially for female royals. However, Princess Charlotte has recently drawn attention for appearing to go against a long-circulated style rule.

According to reports, a speculated royal rule included that female members of the royal family were not allowed to wear dark colors like red, blue, or yellow as nail polish. Instead, they have to stick to pale pinks or any light shade, says TheList.

Princess Charlotte Debunks a Nail Polish Rumor

Princess Charlotte debunked the light-color nail polish rule.

However, this rumor might have been debunked after Prince William and Kate Middleton shared a picture of their daughter on her 11th birthday, which was on May 2, 2026. On looking closely at Charlotte’s picture, it was found that she was wearing blue nail paint.

The speculation of the royal rule of wearing only light colors on the nails was clearly rubbished after Charlotte’s parents shared a picture of her wearing trendy blue nail polish.

It can also be presumed that this rule was more stringent during the late Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, who was said to be not fond of dark colors on the nails. Apart from this, it might also happen that the rule is only applicable to female Royal adults, so Charlotte, being a pre-teen, is allowed to be in her experimental era.

If the light-colored nail polish rule is indeed abolished, it might also be Prince William and Kate Middleton’s strategy to “modernize” the monarchy as the future King and Queen.

An X user pointed out Princess Charlotte's love for nail polish and manicures.

No sooner was the picture shared of Princess Charlotte flaunting her blue nail polish than the internet started reacting to the same. One of the social media users said, “Loving those [nails]! I Iove that they let her be a normal kid.”

Another X user said, “We usually see her in formal clothes with hair in braids, but it's refreshing to see her so normal, like any other tween with blue nails." A user on X pointed out how the 11-year-old bears a stark resemblance to her father.

One of the social media users said, “William with long hair.” An X user had shared Charlotte’s experimental nature when it comes to manicures and nail paints on April 30, 2026.

The post said, “Princess Charlotte loves her girly manicures. She favors blue, especially icy blue. Her Easter dress was an icy blue. Charlotte’s first time wearing nail polish, a bubblegum pink, in 2025 at the Wimbledon Tennis Championship with Catherine. Charlotte’s nails on her parents’ anniversary were a bit longer. Our little Princess is growing up to be a beautiful lady.”

Meanwhile, some insiders close to Princess Charlotte revealed to People in May 2025, “She (Charlotte) is quite a strong character—almost wise beyond her years.” Children's wear designer Amaia Arrieta also said, “It’s truly her personality—it’s not forced. She looks very confident and at ease with herself and the environment she’s in. The maturity that comes with that responsibility—she seems to nail it every time.”
