New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2022 ‘Jump on a Bus’ Remark Resurfaces As She Urges Wealthy Residents To Return
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has taken her words back and is now asking wealthy people to come back to the state. According to reports, she has said, New York needs rich citizens because they pay a lot of taxes that help run schools, roads and other public services.
Meanwhile, her comments come after she previously told some New Yorkers who were unhappy with the state’s condition to “jump on a bus” and leave for Florida. Now, as financial problems have surfaced and Hochul appears to be urging affluent residents to stay, her earlier words have resurfaced in the spotlight, raising questions about her leadership.
Hochul’s Plea
Internet makes a compilation of Kathy Hochul‘s comments from 2022 and 2026.
In the wake of wealthy residents leaving the state, Hochul has said New York needs to be more careful with how it handles taxes. She explained that her goal is not to raise taxes, but to create a system that keeps high earners in New York.
“What I want to make sure we are smart about is having a system in place where it is not just taxing for the sake of taxing and being conscious of the fact that I need people who are high net worth to support the generous social programs that we want to have in our state,” she said.
According to her, affluent residents in New York play a big role in funding social programs that many people depend on. However, Hochul admitted that is where New York has started facing a problem, as the state’s tax base has weakened after some wealthy residents moved away.
“Our tax base has been eroded,” she said, while asking for help and suggesting, “go down to Palm Beach and see who you can bring back home.” Hochul added, “We are in competition with other states who have less of a tax burden on their corporations and their individuals.”
Hochul also said New York is facing strong competition from states like Texas, which have lower taxes. “They are not going there because they have a nicer governor, I know that for sure, but they are going there because of the tax rate,” she said.
Highlighting how companies and workers can now move more easily due to remote work, the New York governor noted that many businesses are choosing Texas mainly because of better tax benefits. In this situation, Hochul appeared to be begging well-earning residents to return to New York.
Hochul’s New Appeal Contradicts Her 2022 Comments
However, despite her plea for help as she asks wealthy people to stay in New York, Hochul is facing controversies over her past comments. Previously in 2022, during a heated political moment, the New York governor had told her opponents to leave the state over disagreements.
“And we are here to say that the era of Trump and Zeldin and Molinaro just jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong, OK?” Hochul said at the time. “Get out of town. Because you do not represent our values. You are not New Yorkers.”
Taking aim at President Donald Trump, Lee Zeldin and Marc Molinaro, Hochul had said that they should go to Florida because they did not represent New York’s values. But now, her tone appears very different.
In recent times, Hochul has stressed that wealthy residents are important for the state’s economy, as their taxes help pay for public programs and services. So while her earlier remarks sparked chaos and are back in the spotlight, Hochul seems to be calling for a more practical approach in recent times. Now, with those remarks back in the spotlight, Hochul appears to be adopting a more pragmatic tone.
