A mother dog and her sweet litter of puppies were rescued from a property in San Jose, Calif., where law enforcement says they were living in "disturbing conditions."

In photos shared by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, the dogs appear to have been kept in a cage outdoors whose floor was lined with dirt, straw, feathers and litter.

Thankfully, officers were able to rescue the dogs and usher them into a brighter future.

"Deputies from the Civil Division were assisting Code Enforcement last month at a property on Quimby Road in unincorporated San Jose, when they discovered several animals living in disturbing conditions," the Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook. "A mother dog and her puppies were rescued, given food and water, and are now safe. County of Santa Clara Animal Services cared for them, and they’re currently in a foster home until they’re big enough to be adopted."

Unfortunately, instances of animal neglect and mistreatment are not rare in the U.S.

Over the last few weeks alone, Morning Honey has reported on three separate instances of dogs and cats being rescued from hoarding or otherwise dangerous conditions.

Police in Washington state responded to a complaint about the smell and noise emanating from a local property and arrived at the scene to find 27 dogs living in what they described as "deplorable conditions which were unsanitary and filled with urine and feces." Thankfully, the dogs were soon brought into the care of the Tacoma Humane Society, where they could go on to be adopted.

Officers in Vista, Calif., spent four days rescuing 11 dogs and two cats from extreme hoarding conditions in an abandoned rental apartment after receiving a call from the property's landlord. The pets were eventually safely brought into the San Diego Humane Society.

And police in Georgia rescued over 80 animals from dangerous conditions in a local home where they were being neglected and abused. They went on to be cared for by the Atlanta Humane Society.
