Police in Georgia recently rescued over 80 animals, most of which were French bulldogs and Pekingese dogs, from what were described as "filthy, dangerous conditions" in a Statesboro home earlier this month.

Deputies from the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant issued in connection with an animal cruelty investigation and arrested Debra Jo Green and Kenneth Mark Berrin on felony animal cruelty charges.

It's unclear exactly how many animals were kept in the home and how many animal cruelty counts the suspects will face. However, reports state that at least five animals were found dead at the scene. Grice Connect reported that there were 50 dogs and "several" cats rescued.

The Sheriff's Office worked in collaboration with local animal welfare agencies and rescues, as well as volunteer veterinarians, to determine what care each of the animals needed.

On October 14, the Sheriff's Office warned the public about the operation, without going into specific details.

"Heavy Law Enforcement Presence – Sunnview Court," they announced on Facebook. "The Bulloch County Sheriff's Office responded to an animal cruelty case in the area of Sunnview Court involving over fifty cats and dogs. Two suspects are currently in custody. Bulloch County Animal Control is on scene assisting the Sherif’s Office. At this time, there is no threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement, along with Animal Control, may remain on scene throughout the day. More information will be provided as it becomes available."

That same day, the Atlanta Humane Society shared photos of the abused dogs on Instagram, along with a description of the events.

"These animals have been trapped in a nightmare. More than 80 French Bulldogs and Pekingese were found living in rooms where urine and feces covered the floors. Some were confined to tiny crates, while others were locked away with no food or water. They show clear signs of abuse and neglect. Some suffer from painful skin problems, mobility issues, and eye diseases. Mother dogs struggle to care for their newborn puppies in these filthy, dangerous conditions. But today their nightmare is ending," the message reads.

The Atlanta Humane Society went on to call for donations to help provide care for the rescued animals, explaining that all gifts would be matched.

If you'd like to donate for these animals' "medical care, comfort, and safety," you can do so on the Atlanta Humane Society's website.

In a second post on 15 October, the organization provided an update.

"After subjecting these animals to neglect and abuse, the individuals responsible are being prosecuted," they wrote. "Our Animal Protection Unit is actively working with law enforcement to ensure accountability after removing more than 80 animals from horrific conditions. We are gathering evidence, assisting prosecutors, and standing ready to testify in court. Our dedication extends far beyond the day of the rescue. It is an ongoing promise to protect animals and hold abusers accountable. If you stand with us in this work, your support will provide ongoing care for these rescued animals and strengthen our cruelty investigations."
