Jon Stewart criticized President Donald Trump after the president used the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner to support his push for a new White House ballroom.
Stewart addressed the incident on The Daily Show's Monday episode, mocking Trump’s remark that the attack showed the need for a secure ballroom. “A ballroom? That’s the solution?” Stewart said, according to The Daily Beast, continuing: “That is the dumbest idea I have ever heard.”

The comedian also pointed out how everyday Americans can’t build a ballroom to protect them from gun violence, stating, “What about the un-ballroomed rest of us? Not every town can have a ballroom. Didn’t you even see Footloose?”
Trump was unharmed when a man attempted to breach security at the Washington Hilton during Saturday’s dinner, which included the president, first lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet officials, and journalists.
Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, who was taken into custody after the incident.
Stewart pointed out that Trump seemed to learn the wrong lesson from the attack. Instead of focusing on public safety, he used the moment to argue for a $400 million “drone-proof” ballroom.
The comedian began the segment by suggesting Trump might respond by calling for “sensible gun control,” then cut to the president’s remarks about the ballroom.

After the incident, Trump stated that the venue “not a particularly secure building” and claimed that a White House ballroom would provide a safer environment for major events.
Stewart dismissed that explanation, saying the idea did nothing for the public. “I’m sure the kids will love to hear that,” Stewart said, pointing to the impracticality of presenting a ballroom as a security solution after an armed attack.
The shooting also caught the attention of other late-night hosts with stars such as Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers criticizing the political response to the incident while expressing relief that no one was seriously injured.
Federal officials indicated that Allen faces charges related to the alleged attempt on Trump’s life. Investigators have been looking into an alleged manifesto linked to him to understand a possible motive.
The White House Correspondents’ Association announced that the dinner would be rescheduled after security officials ended the event. Trump later praised the Secret Service and law enforcement for their response.
Stewart also poked fun at the president rating the attractiveness of the secret service personnel as one of the reasons he felt safe.
The segment honed in on Trump’s ballroom proposal as a key target of Stewart’s critique, with the host stating that the president turned a frightening security breach into a sales pitch for a personal construction project.
Trump has long supported plans for a large White House event space, stating it would allow presidents to host major gatherings without relying on hotel ballrooms or temporary setups.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has challenged the project, arguing it needs proper review and congressional approval before proceeding, The Daily Beast reported.
Stewart wrapped up the segment by reiterating his main point about how Trump’s response did not match the seriousness of the situation.
