Can Donald Trump become president of the United States for a third term?
Is Trump Eyeing a Third Term in 2028? Harvard Professor Weighs in on Possibility
Speculations are rife that Donald Trump might become president for a third time.
While the president is reportedly considering remaining in the White House for yet another term, a new report has revealed how the same can be achieved, despite the U.S. Constitution allowing a person to be elected president for not more than two terms.
Trump's former political strategist, Steve Bannon, declared to The Economist last year, "Trump is going to be president in '28, and people ought to just get accommodated with that. At the appropriate time, we'll lay out what the plan is. But there is a plan."
Following Bannon's remarks, renowned Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz reportedly researched the matter and wrote his findings in his new book, Could President Trump Constitutionally Serve a Third Term? My Nonpartisan Legal Analysis.
Now, RadarOnline has reported that in his book, Dershowitz, an expert on the U.S. Constitution, explained the 22nd Amendment, which states that, "No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice."
However, there is a way for Trump to be "selected" as commander-in-chief for a third time.
According to the author, the Amendment is "wishy-washy."
"The important point is that there is a hole in the 22nd Amendment larger than the new [planned] Ballroom at the White House," Dershowitz wrote.
Steve Bannon says he is a "huge advocate" for Donald Trump's third term.
The Scenarios Where Donald Trump Can Be President for a Third Time
According to Dershowitz, the media outlet reports, Trump can become the president "in any scenario other than being elected."
"There are four to five scenarios in which a person can become president without ever being elected," he writes.
Dershowitz opines that the most probable scenario is that in 2028, Donald Trump Jr. will run for vice president, while current Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio will campaign for president.
Once Trump Jr. becomes the vice president, he will resign, and Trump will be nominated for vice president, subject to Congressional approval.
Alternatively, Trump can be appointed as Speaker of the House or Secretary of State, making him the second and fourth-in-line to the Oval Office.
"If he were to be appointed to any of those positions and if the people in the line in front of him, starting with the president and vice president, left office for one reason or another, President Trump could serve," Dershowitz writes.
Donald Trump floats the possibility of a third term as the president.
'They Can Amend the Constitution'
Dershowitz clarified that while he is nonpartisan, he wrote the book to inform people about the possible scenarios.
"It can be used by those who want to advocate a constitutional amendment, it can be used by those who want to advocate a third term for Trump," he said.
The Harvard professor also insisted that his 164-page book is a "must-read" for two reasons: first, that a solution is possible.
"If people don't want it to happen, there is a remedy – they can amend the Constitution. The American public must know what the possibilities are," he said.
Dershowitz then added, "And No. 2, not all my readers went to Harvard Law School, and this book is exactly how I would teach a seminar on the Constitution. Giving all the sides and letting you decide. I put the reader in the classroom."
