'Horrible Response': Kevin Hart Under Fire for Defending Tony Hinchcliffe’s Controversial George Floyd Joke
Despite comedian Tony Hitchcliffe’s roast of Kevin Hart on Netflix’s The Roast of Kevin Hart sparking a major controversy, Hart has now come out in support of Hinchcliffe.
During the show, Hinchcliffe had dragged the late George Floyd in his comedy set, drawing significant backlash.
However, Hart has called Hinchcliffe's comedy sketch one of the best of the night.
This has not gone down well with many social media users who expected Hart to showcase sensitivity and accountability amid the controversy.
In a recent episode of The Breakfast Club on Tuesday, May 26, Hart came out in support of Hinchcliffe.
“The black community is so proud of you. Right now, George Floyd is looking up at us all, laughing so hard he can’t breathe,” the latter had joked during the roast.
'It’s Not a New Approach to Comedy'
Kevin Hart defends Tony Hinchcliffe's George Floyd joke.
Defending the comedian, Hart said that even though the joke was not tasteful, it falls under Hinchcliffe’s style of comedy and is something that is done every year.
The Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle actor said, “It wasn’t a tasteful joke to our culture, to our audience.. but our audience that’s watching the roast, if you’re watching the roast, you get why they’re doing it. You get why the racial humor is on the table. I wasn’t shocked. Like, that’s what they do. Go look at the Tom Brady one. Like, that’s what they do. It happens every year when they do a roast. It’s not new. This isn’t new. It’s not a new agenda. It’s not a new approach to comedy.”
On podcast host Charlamagne tha God questioning Hart on whether he felt Hinchcliffe went too far with the joke on Floyd, the actor was quick to reply, “It’s Tony Hinchcliffe. Like, I don’t expect less, I don’t expect more. That’s why you’re there.”
Social Media Users Lash out at Kevin Hart

However, this did not go down well with a number of social media users who thought Hart should have shown more sensitivity.
One user wrote, “This is a horrible response.”
Another added, “Things can be 0% your fault and 100% your responsibility. As a husband and father, he should know this. BYE.”
An individual stated, “The roast was for KEVIN HART not to mock a black man’s death…But he made sure HIS kids were not to be mentioned.”
“Nah, bro, have some integrity,” commented one user.
One person wrote, “Wow! Yeah, Kevin, you lost me with this one… You could have been honest and said YES, he went too far with that joke.”
Hart further claimed that Hinchcliffe had one of the “best sets” of the night.
He also cited an example of Pete Davidson, who cracked a joke about Charlie Kirk’s assassination as part of his comedy sketch.
The Get Hard actor said, “Like, would I tell those jokes? No. But do I get why they’re being told? Yes. Like, I’m not looking at Pete crazy. I’m not looking at Tony crazy. Like, that’s what I know what you’re going to do. I know your style of comedy.”
