Erika Kirk revealed the reason that she attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in late April, saying that she wanted to confront the journalists who have been misrepresenting her.

Charlie Kirk's widow offered a personal explanation about why she chose to attend the event where a shooting would break out. Traumatized, she hid under a table as the shots rang out, and afterward, she was escorted from the dinner in tears. Now, she has chosen to speak out about that night.

Erika Kirk addresses why she attended the White House Correspondents Dinner.

Speaking on The Charlie Kirk Show, Kirk said that she chose to attend the event even though she's constantly being criticized by the media. She decided to face the situation head-on and meet the people who write about her in the press.

“It was because many of the journalists in that room have attempted to dehumanize me, and I wanted to meet some of them face to face, quite frankly,” she said. “Why have a conversation about me when you can have a conversation with me?”

Kirk described why she felt targeted by how the media chooses to cover her, saying, "Every morning I wake up to another headline lying about me.” She added that well-known figures and commentators had gone further, stating, “I have comedians dressing up in whiteface, I have people saying I'm not fit to be CEO, and I have Candace Owens claiming that I murdered my husband.”

She encountered a Daily Mail reporter

While the evening was cut short, Erika Kirk met at least one journalist face-to-face and was able to even wrangle a story out of the experience.

"For example, a journalist from The Daily Mail came up to me. She introduced herself… to which, I replied, ‘It is so nice to put a face to the name. Especially with all the slander, the lies, the accusations, that are out there surrounding my husband’s murder and myself.’”

Kirk spoke her truth and said that by Monday things would be back to normal and the reporters would be back to writing their stories after their evening of mingling. The reporter replied, "I know. It's so special, right? Isn't tonight so special?"

Erika Kirk talks about the evil in this country.

She also talked about the broader role of the media and how it affects politics, arguing, "It seems to me that nothing will ever be enough for the evil in this world. Our country has become unrecognizable.”

Kirk added that even the narrative surrounding her family had been distorted, saying, “These people have perverted the truth to the point that they motivated the murder of my husband.”

The TPUSA chief also spoke a little bit about the shooting incident, stating, "“Gunshots rang out and total chaos ensued,” Kirk said. “You guys have all seen what happened next because there are a thousand videos of it.”

The White House Correspondents' Dinner is traditionally celebrates journalism and political reporting. But now, Kirk's comments have added another dimension to that discussion as she highlights the tension between public figures and the press.
