'Best 10 Years of My Life': Cameron Diaz Breaks Silence on Decade-Long Hollywood Hiatus
In 2024, Cameron Diaz made headlines for securing a role opposite Keanu Reeves in Jonah Hill's dark comedy film Outcome, which premiered on Apple TV+ on April 10, 2026.
Amid the buzz over his film's success, Hill seemed more excited about managing to pull Diaz out of her decade-long retirement.
Speaking to Extra TV, Hill reflected on how his prayers were answered when Diaz accepted the role.
Meanwhile, the actress revealed the reasons behind her temporary absence from Hollywood.
She previously announced her retirement in 2018, after last appearing in the 2014 remake of Annie.
'She Is Just the Perfect Friend and Artist'
Jonah Hill and Cameron Diaz discuss the latter's comeback to Hollywood.
As Diaz made her high-profile return to the silver screen, Hill appeared to celebrate the moment.
Speaking at the film's New York City premiere on April 6, Hill praised Diaz, calling her “an actual angel” and thanking her for accepting the role.
“It sounds fake, but this is all true. Cameron is an actual angel that fell from heaven,” Hill said.
“When she came on the screen for her camera test or something, we're all back there like, 'Whoa, we're making a real movie,’” he added.
For Hill, who previously directed smaller, more personal films, he said Outcome felt like a significant step up.
“My first movie [I directed] was like bunch of skaters and my second movie was me and my therapist, you know, so this was like real deal,” Hill stated.
“As an actor, she gives the best performance of her career, in my opinion… knockout performance,” the actor-director noted, while hailing the veteran film star as the "perfect friend and artist."
"As a person, she just supported me and continues to support me in such a real way,” Hill added.
He continued, “She is just the perfect friend and artist. Combination actually of those two.”
Meanwhile, Hill's compliments come as a form of gratitude towards Diaz, who notably stepped away from Hollywood for 10 years.
Now, her comeback draws attention from fans, thus turning Outcome into an important milestone in Hill’s directing career.
Cameron Diaz Opens up About Her Temporary Retirement
Following her comeback, Diaz is opening up about her decade-long break from Hollywood.
Calling it a time that brought her “peace” and a stronger sense of self, the actress explained why she took a break from her onscreen appearances.
Appearing on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop podcast, Diaz explained, “I realized I handed off parts of my life to all these other people, and they took it, and some people I had to basically take it back and take responsibility for my own life.”
Therefore, she said that taking a step back allowed her to refocus and take responsibility for her own choices.
While appearing on The Graham Norton Show to promote her 2025 Netflix film Back in Action, Diaz reflected on how much she loved her temporary retirement.
“Oh my G*d, I loved it. It was the best 10 years of my life," Diaz said, adding, "I was just free to say, 'I'm a mom, I'm a wife, I'm living my life.’”
Meanwhile, during her time away, the actress built a family with her husband Benji Madden after tying the knot in 2015.
They welcomed two children -- daughter Raddix and son Cardinal -- and Diaz simply focused on motherhood and family.
Sources told RadarOnline, “Cameron wasn't looking to turn her nose up at Hollywood when she took that extended break.”
“She needed to focus on family first, but it also gave her a chance to step away from the constant grind and pressure that goes with being an A-list actress,” they added.
“Cameron totally dedicated herself to family, which improved her and Benji's marriage enormously and gave her time to clear her head and appreciate the world outside of acting,” the sources said.
