President Donald Trump issued a scathing attack on Pope Leo XIV over his criticism of U.S. military actions in Iran and Venezuela. The remarks came after the Catholic leader criticized the U.S. president for his foreign and immigration policies. Trump went on to describe Leo as “weak” and “terrible” in a lengthy post directed at the pope.

According to The Daily Beast, Trump explained his criticism of the Chicago-born pope in a lengthy post after a 60 Minutes segment showed top American cardinals Robert McElroy, Jeffrey Tobin, and Blase Cupich echoing the pope's concerns about several of his administration’s policies. He began the post by saying, “Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.”

Trump also responded to the pope’s remarks about fear, noting how churches were closed during the COVID-19 era and priests and ministers were arrested for holding church services. Trump also praised the pope’s brother, Louis, a MAGA supporter.

He continued his rant, saying, “I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon. I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s terrible that America attacked Venezuela, a Country that was sending massive amounts of Drugs into the United States and, even worse, emptying their prisons, including murderers, drug dealers, and killers, into our Country.”

The 79-year-old argued that he doesn’t want a pope who criticizes him for carrying out what voters chose him to do, pointing to his election win and claiming success in reducing crime and boosting the stock market.

Trump emphasized that Leo’s election as pope is a “shocking surprise.” He claimed that he was elected for the honorable position because he was an “American” and that “would be the best way to deal with Donald J. Trump.”

He continued his criticism, adding, “Unfortunately, Leo’s Weak on Crime, Weak on Nuclear Weapons, does not sit well with me, nor does the fact that he meets with Obama Sympathizers like David Axelrod, a LOSER from the Left, who is one of those who wanted churchgoers and clerics to be arrested.”

In conclusion, he urged Leo to focus on his role as Pope and to rely on common sense without any political inclination. He suggested that political inclination is damaging both his image and the Catholic Church.

According to The Guardian, Leo stepped out in St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City on Saturday, where he publicly criticized the ongoing war without explicitly mentioning the U.S.-Iran war. But it was his strongest criticism yet of a conflict which Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth previously described as ‘sacred.’

He said, “Enough of the idolatry of self and money! Enough of the display of power! Enough of war! True strength is shown in serving life.”

Meanwhile, the Daily Beast report suggests McElroy also warned against the ongoing wars while questioning the moral basis of the Iran conflict. Cupich, on the other hand, criticized the White House’s decision to post videos splicing footage of strikes alongside footage taken from video games and Hollywood blockbusters.

“We’re dehumanizing the victims of war by turning the suffering of people and the killing of children and our own soldiers into entertainment,” said Cupich.
