'They Don’t Call Me Back': Nicolas Cage Names Christopher Nolan Among Famous Directors Who Ghosted Him
Nicolas Cage has redefined versatility in Hollywood with his diverse filmography.
However, he is also known for impulsively rejecting some interesting roles and movies in the past, which later turned out to be successful affairs.
In his latest interaction, the actor has admitted that some filmmakers never called him after he had rejected their films.
While on a promotional spree for his upcoming biographical drama, Madden, Cage name-dropped filmmakers who never contacted him after he turned down their movies.
However, he praised Madden director David O. Russell, who called him again despite the actor once rejecting his movie in the past.
The Surfer actor was reportedly keen to maintain a “mysterious” persona during his younger days when he rejected offers from big directors, but has admitted that he now lives an “extraordinarily boring” life.
In an interaction with The New York Times, he stated how Russell has been the only filmmaker who approached him years after he had previously rejected an opportunity to work with him.
Nicolas Cage Recalls Directors Getting 'Their Feelings Hurt'
Nicolas Cage revealed that he had turned down Christopher Nolan's film 'Insomnia.'
Cage, who is all set to play legendary NFL coach John Madden in Russell’s film, Madden, said, “He’s the only director that I ever said no to who actually came back and offered me another movie.”
Unlike the Silver Linings Playbook director, he stated that some filmmakers got "their feelings hurt" and didn't call him back after he turned down their movies, a thing which Cage said has happened to him a number of times.
The Carpenter’s Son actor did not hesitate to take the names of the directors who gave him the cold shoulder. The names included stalwarts like Christopher Nolan, Paul Thomas Anderson and Woody Allen.
The Academy Award winner said, “It’s happened with Christopher Nolan, it’s happened with Woody Allen, it’s happened with Paul Thomas Anderson. They don’t call me back.”
Which Film Was Offered to Nicolas Cage by Christopher Nolan?
Nicolas Cage is known for his versatility.
Cage recalled that he was offered the 2002 psychological thriller Insomnia by Nolan, which revolved around two detectives solving a homicidal case in Alaska.
The acclaimed movie starred Hollywood biggies like Robin Williams, Hillary Swank and Al Pacino in the lead roles.
Cage turned down the movie, which later turned out to be a success. While the actor did not mention which movies he turned down from Anderson and Allen, he hinted that those were the early films of their careers.
Almost taking a dig at the directors who did not call him back, the Golden Globe winner said that Russell showed a lot of “class” as he called him back for Madden despite being rejected by the actor many years ago.
The Longlegs star stated, “David did call me, and it showed a lot of class that he would call me back and invite me again, and I didn’t want to say no to him again because I have great respect for his talent.”
Cage called shooting for Madden a “beautiful experience,” and said that he enjoyed working with his co-stars John Mulaney and Christian Bale.
However, the actor added that playing the late NFL coach was a challenge for him, for which he had to get out of his comfort zone.
