An X post mentioning Sheriff Nate Brooksby's sudden resignation.

Sheriff Nate Brooksby has resigned and announced his retirement after complaints were raised about his office in Washington County, Utah. The decision was made public on Friday, March 27, by Deputy County Attorney Courtney Sinagra.

Speaking with The Salt Lake Tribune, Sinagra said Brooksby chose to resign after undisclosed complaints reached Utah's Washington County from "individuals who were concerned with operations at the sheriff's office."

The exact details of those complaints have not been shared. Sinagra noted that while Brooksby stepped down in response to the concerns, he did not agree with what was being said against him.

"The commissioners discussed those with the sheriff, who disagreed with what was being said, but he did decide to go ahead and resign and move on to retirement after 30 years in law enforcement," she said.

Sinagra also confirmed that following Brooksby's resignation, "the complainant asked the matter not be pursued further, and we're respecting their request." Authorities have since agreed to honor that request.

Sheriff Nate Brooksby speaks about receiving a phone call about Charlie Kirk’s suspected shooter.

Prior to his resignation, Sheriff Nate Brooksby had spent 27 years working in Washington County when he became involved in Charlie Kirk's assassination case. Kirk, a conservative activist, was shot while addressing a large crowd at Utah Valley University in September 2025 and later died from his injuries.

In the aftermath, Brooksby received a call from a retired deputy who claimed to know the shooter. It was Tyler Robinson's family who had contacted the deputy, seeking help in arranging a peaceful surrender.

"Part of the negotiation of getting him to bring himself in was that we would treat it as delicate and as soft as possible to make him feel comfortable to where he would show up at my office," Brooksby told the Associated Press.

Police ultimately identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the main suspect. He surrendered to authorities after the phone call helped guide the process, with Brooksby having assured that officers would handle the situation gently so Robinson would feel safe turning himself in. Robinson was subsequently charged with aggravated murder.
