Rory McIlroy Delivers Emotional Message After Wild Final Round Nearly Costs Him Masters Title
Rory McIlroy couldn't control his emotions while paying tribute to his parents after adding another chapter to his legacy by winning the Masters again.
McIlroy beat Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young and Justin Rose to claim his second Green Jacket, becoming one of just four players to achieve this feat. The Northern Irishman triumphed by only one shot, following a roller-coaster weekend where he lost the lead several times.
Rory Mcllroy won his second Masters, retaining his Green Jacket.
The reigning champion got off to a fast start and posted low scores on Thursday and Friday, establishing the biggest 36-hole advantage in Masters history. That gave him a cushion he used though a slower round on Saturday left him tied with Young.
According to The Irish Star, he kept battling for the lead — even falling into a tie for fourth at one point, leading to the impression that he would have to hand the Green Jacket to another in Butler Cabin.
However, after making birdies on holes 12 and 13, he maintained consistent play and reached the 18th hole knowing a bogey would be enough to win over Scheffler, who was already in the clubhouse at 11-under. Following an emotional moment on the green, he tapped in for bogey to secure victory by one stroke. He was then met by his parents just off the green. His wife, Erica Stoll, and their child, Poppy, were present to welcome him.
Gerry and Rosie McIlroy did not attend his 2024 Masters victory, and the 36-year-old acknowledged that he had to convince them to travel to Augusta this year, as reported by The Mirror.

During the Green Jacket ceremony, McIlroy began honoring his parents but became emotional and needed a moment to compose himself. He said, "I want to thank... not thank, jeez... my Mom and Dad. They weren't here last year to celebrate with us, and surprisingly I had to convince them to come this year, because they thought the reason I won was because they weren't here. I'm glad we proved that wrong. Mom and Dad... I owe everything to you. You're the most wonderful parents. If I can be half the parent to Poppy as you were to me then I'll know I've done a good job."
McIlroy acknowledged that he thought about his parents during the final round, as he said in his press conference. He said, "I caught myself thinking about them a couple of times out on the golf course and had to tell myself 'nope, not yet. not yet'. It's really cool to have them here. They missed it last year and the first thing I wanted to do was fly over to see them, because I wouldn't be sitting up here if it wasn't for them. I had to convince them to come this year, because they thought the reason I won last year was because they weren't here. I said on the putting green I'm glad we proved that wrong. They can keep coming as long as they want."
"It's amazing to have them here, I'm excited to celebrate with them tonight," the two-time winner said.
