King Charles and Queen Camilla’s romance is one of the most scrutinized relationships in the history of the British royal family. Queen Elizabeth II’s absence from their wedding in 2005 drew attention. Later, the palace issued an official statement announcing that Her Majesty and Prince Philip would host a reception for the couple.

According to the BBC, the palace released a statement in 2005 insisting that Queen Elizabeth’s decision not to attend King Charles and Queen Camilla’s wedding wasn’t a “snub.” It was stated that the Queen and Prince Philip were expected to attend a church blessing after the ceremony and that they would also host a reception for the couple.

Her Majesty did not attend the small civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall, which reportedly had 28 guests. A spokeswoman told the publication, “She (Queen) is very pleased to be giving the wedding reception at the Castle.”

The statement addressed speculation suggesting that the Queen opposed Charles and Camilla’s union. According to Cosmopolitan UK, former royal butler Grant Harrold was one of the few guests to attend the intimate wedding. He talked about the “biggest misconception” associated with the couple’s wedding later in 2023. He rubbished the speculations, suggesting that the Queen wasn’t “supportive” of the wedding.

Harrold explained the situation, noting it happened 20 years ago when Charles was marrying a divorcée. Therefore, he believed that the Queen’s faith may have influenced her decision not to attend the civil ceremony. In fact, Harrold asserted that the monarch was “really happy” on her son’s day and even delivered a “funny speech.”

He said, “There was a real party atmosphere. The Queen doing a speech was a real surprise, you don’t expect that and obviously the King as he now is making a speech. It was an amazing occasion and being invited as a guest was an honor.”

Queen Elizabeth reportedly never approved of Camilla.

Nevertheless, the tensions between Queen Elizabeth and Camilla have been a subject of ongoing discussion. According to excerpts of Tom Bower’s biography, Rebel Prince: The Power and Passion and Defiance of Prince Charles, published in The Daily Mail in 2018, Charles confronted his mother about welcoming his beloved into the royal family during the summer following Princess Diana’s death in 1997.

In response, the Queen neither approved nor forgave Camilla for preventing Charles’ wedding to Diana from going ahead. Bower claimed that the Queen even called Camilla “that wicked woman,” and said, “I want nothing to do with her.”

In fact, according to Newsweek, royal biographer Christopher Andersen also insisted that “The queen always detested Camilla,” further noting that she agreed to support Camilla becoming queen consort, a move which was influenced by pressure from Charles rather than her own choice.

In February 2022, during a speech on the 70th anniversary of her historic reign, Queen Elizabeth II surprised everyone when she announced, “It is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
