New Biography Claims Kate Middleton Was Seen as ‘Too Common’
For years, Kate Middleton was mocked in the British press as "Waity Katie" and they criticized her for her middle-class background, while royal insiders also took aim at her because they doubted if she belonged in the royal family.
Now, according to royal author Christopher Andersen, the Princess of Wales' story is one of the most remarkable transformations in modern royal history. She has evolved from being an outsider into becoming a one of the favorite and trusted people within the monarchy, per Fox News.
In his new book Kate!, Andersen claims Queen Camilla was initially among Kate’s biggest critics. Apparently, she thought Prince William's wife didn't have the background that a future queen should have.
“In the beginning, Camilla was one of Kate’s fiercest critics,” Andersen said “She did not think she was up to snuff, as it were. She was below the salt. She had no aristocratic blood.”
Camilla apparently had very firm beliefs about who could be the future queen, and what they would look like. But, she didn't think that Kate was worthy enough to make the mark.
Royal family tensions over Kate Middleton’s "too common" background
Princess Catherine runs back to collect bouquets of flowers from the crowd.
It seems as if Meghan Markle wasn't the only outsider criticized when entering into the royal family. Just like Princess Diana, and even Camilla, Kate also faced criticism when she married into the family.
Anderson claims that the palace was concerned about Kate's upbringing and the fact that she came for an ordinary family background.
Kate, now known publicly as Princess Catherine, grew up as the daughter of a flight attendant and commercial airline pilot before she met Prince William when they met while attending the same university together.
“The palace didn’t really want her,” Andersen claimed. “People like Camilla didn’t want her because they felt that she was too common to be the wife of a future king.”
They were also worried about Kate's mother, Carole Middleton, who the British press portrayed as someone who was ambitious enough to want her daughter to be married into the monarchy.
But it was Kate herself who change the minds of people in the palace with her discipline and consistency. She also has an ability to avoid public controversy and never seems to be involved in any scandal.
“She somehow, as the Brits like to say, never put a foot wrong,” Andersen said. “And today, as a result, she’s pretty much universally admired.”
Camilla had a "change of heart" toward Kate
Kate Middleton recently visited Italy.
Anderson also claims that Kate's growing popularity didn't sit right with some of the other royals.
“Charles and Camilla needed to be the stars of the royal show,” Andersen wrote. “But that was not going to happen as long as the public was consumed with the ongoing saga of the young prince and his romance with a dazzling commoner.”
But after a difficult period where Camilla tried to call the shots with Kate, she soon had to relent. Not only did Prince William fiercely protect his wife, but things fundamentally changed when both Kate and King Charles were diagnosed with cancer.
“Camilla had a change of heart,” Andersen claimed, adding that Kate became someone who could “lift” King Charles’ spirits during his own cancer treatment.
