The administration's plans to print a new $250 currency note featuring Donald Trump's face have sparked massive anger online. By law, United States paper money is strictly reserved for individuals who have already died. Because Trump is very much alive, the Treasury Department's push to design prototypes of the bill has triggered intense backlash.

Adding to the controversy, reports have emerged that Patricia Solimene, the chief of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, was reassigned against her will after she pushed back against the plan. She had warned political appointees about the legal and procedural barriers of putting a living president on the bill, as per Indy 100.

Now, netizens are hitting back at the proposal, calling it "out of touch" and an unnecessary vanity project meant to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence.

For the bill to happen, Congress must pass a new law to bypass the historic restriction on living figures.

Social Media Users React Strongly to $250 Bill

A post is currently going viral on X that shows Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent answering the questions of the reporters at the White House press briefing.

Questioning the $250 bill, a Fox News reporter named Peter Doocy asked Bessent, "How long until we see your signature next to President Trump's face on a $250 bill?"

Bessent replied, "At present, no living person can be on U.S. Currency. Right now, there is proposed legislation to change that so Donald J. Trump could be on the $250 bill. We have prepared things in advance."

Donald Trump Has Tried To Place His Image and Name on National Items

The new currency push follows a pattern of Donald Trump trying to place his image and name on national items. He previously added his face to U.S. National Parks passes and successfully inserted his name into the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, according to WTTW News.

The president faced widespread backlash on social media following reports of a plan to feature his likeness on new US passports. Critics argued that national documents, currency, and public parks should remain free of political partisanship rather than serving as vehicles for personal branding.
