Tensions between Iran and the U.S. escalated further after Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf announced that Tehran will not negotiate under pressure from President Donald Trump. He said that Iran has spent the past two weeks preparing the new military options as the ceasefire approaches its deadline.

The response from Iran's parliament speaker comes after Trump spoke ahead of the April 22 deadline marking the end of the two-week ceasefire.

Writing on X, Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf stated, “Trump, by imposing a siege and violating the ceasefire, seeks to turn this negotiating table— in his own imagination— into a table of surrender or to justify renewed warmongering.” He further added, “We do not accept negotiations under the shadow of threats, and in the past two weeks, we have prepared to reveal new cards on the battlefield.”

Earlier in the day, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also called out the United States’ approach towards them. He wrote, “Honoring commitments is the basis of meaningful dialogue. Deep historical mistrust in Iran toward U.S. gov conduct remains, while unconstructive & contradictory signals from American officials carry a bitter message; they seek Iran’s surrender. Iranians do not submit to force.”

In a follow-up post on X, he said, “Adherence to commitments is the logic that justifies any kind of dialogue.” He pointed out that long-standing mistrust in Iran toward the U.S., combined with the recent “non-constructive and contradictory approach” of American officials, “carries a bitter message” that they are pushing for Iran to surrender. In closing, he said, “The people of Iran will not bow to coercion.”

According to PBS News, Asked about the Tuesday deadline, Trump said, “then lots of bombs start going off,” while speaking with the publication on Monday morning. In addition, when he was asked whether Iran would participate in the peace talks in Islamabad, Trump remained uncertain.

He said, “I don’t know. I mean, they’re supposed to be there. We agreed to be there, although they say we didn’t. But no, it was set up. And we’ll see whether or not it’s there. If they’re not there, that’s fine too.” Trump remains assertive in his demand that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons.

Trump’s remarks come as Iran prepares for the second round of talks in Pakistan, with uncertainty over whether Tehran will participate. With the April 22 ceasefire deadline approaching, a temporary truce has paused fighting, but tensions remain high over Iran’s nuclear program and issues in the Strait of Hormuz.

While speaking with the publication, Trump also expressed confidence in the negotiating skills of his “A-team”, referring to his son-in-law Jared Kushner, whose Middle East business dealings have drawn conflict of interest question. He said, “I sent my A-Team, he’s done an excellent job. He doesn’t participate with Saudi now, as you know. He’s taken… He doesn’t do that. He has a business, but he doesn’t participate now.”

Both Kushner and Vice President JD Vance participated in the first round of negotiations.
