JD Vance had a blunt warning for Donald Trump before the war
JD Vance Warned Trump in Nine Words Before His Iran Move—But It Didn’t Change Much
JD Vance was reportedly critical of the idea of a war with Israel against Iran while discussing the same with the planning members. He also did not shy away from being vocal about his negative opinion of Donald Trump (79).
According to The Mirror, a new report detailing the inner workings of the President’s advisory circle in the weeks leading up to the conflict revealed that the Vice President (41) also told Trump that war was a “bad idea.” Reportedly, Vance had established his political career by opposing the U.S.’s involvement in foreign conflicts. According to the New York Times, he is said to have previously called the war with Iran “a huge distraction of resources” and “massively expensive.”
JD Vance was extremely skeptical about the Iran war and thought it was a bad idea.
Unlike many of the President’s leading White House and military advisors, JD Vance shared his skepticism about the Iran war with colleagues. Two days before the U.S. and Israel launched their first attack against Iran, at the final war-planning meeting on February 26, 2026, Vance had a blunt nine-word warning for Trump.
The Vice President said, “You know, I think this is a bad idea.” However, he added, “But if you want to do it, I'll support you." Vance reportedly thought that such an aggressive regime change would prove to be a disaster for the nation in the days and weeks that were leading to the first strikes by the U.S. and Israel against Iran.
However, once he was clear on Trump’s intentions of ultimately going ahead with the strikes, he argued that it must be done with maximum force, hoping that the conflict would be resolved quickly. The Vice President was also vocal at exclusive planning meetings, where he revealed that a war with Iran had the potential to create chaos across the Middle East and result in heavy casualties.
The former corporate lawyer thought that the war could also destroy Donald Trump’s political support in the country, and many of his supporters would feel that this decision was a betrayal of one of his important campaign promises.
JD Vance takes a sharp jibe at Iranian authorities amid the conflict.
He furthermore attempted to highlight the likely shortage of American munitions in an extended conflict, while also reminding the planning members that even with advanced intelligence, they would not be able to predict how Iran would retaliate after the attack.
After weeks of deliberation, including a visit from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a group of top U.S. officials met for the last time to settle the President’s decision to launch the strike against Iran.
Reportedly, apart from JD Vance, the February 26 meeting also included Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, White House counsel David Warrington, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, White House Communications Director Stephen Cheung, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Dan Caine.
After a briefing of the planned strikes by Hegseth and Caine, Donald Trump urged the members to give their views about the war for one last time. While it was already known that JD Vance is against the idea, he again strongly opposed the conflict.
