“I Was in Pieces”: Simon Cowell Explains Why He Went Missing After Liam Payne’s Death
The death of Liam Payne had a profound impact on those who worked closely with him, including Simon Cowell. Speaking about the aftermath, Cowell shared that he stepped away from his professional commitments as he struggled to come to terms with the loss.
The record executive described the period as particularly difficult, revealing that he took time off to process the tragedy of losing the singer at just 31.
‘I Literally Just Disappeared Somewhere for a Week’
Simon Cowell talks about first discovering Liam Payne.
Appearing as a guest on the Daily Mail’s Tales From the Celebrity Trenches podcast, Simon Cowell stated that he was busy shooting Netflix’s The Next Act in 2024. During the production of the show, he learned that the Story of My Life singer had a tragic end to his life.
He shared that he was enjoying mentoring a new generation of talent, describing them as full of promise. Simon Cowell added that their chaotic dynamic was part of the appeal, noting that the energy and unpredictability made the experience “really interesting.”
The producer remarked, “Just getting to know them and liking them actually more than anything else. And their folks as well.” He stated that, in between all of this, he learned that Liam Payne had passed away.
According to the BBC, On October 16, 2024, Liam Payne was in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At 16:11 local time, he was in the hotel’s lobby, struggling to stand because he had consumed various intoxicating substances. Esteba Grassi, the Chief Receptionist, dragged him to his room. By 17:00, Grassi requested emergency services.
They claimed he was “overwhelmed by drugs and alcohol” and feared that Payne’s life was in danger. Their fear came true because at about 17:07, the hotel staff told the cops about hearing a loud thud in the courtyard, where Payne’s corpse was found.
He was taken aback by the singer’s death, leaving him in an emotional mess. He said, “Obviously, because of what happened with Liam in the middle of all of this, it was like, wow, what do you do in a situation like that?”
He called the situation “bad” and stated, “I was in pieces and uh you know I I've got so many things going on in my head.” Cowell was so much affected by the news that he could not shoot the Netflix show, as he “disappeared” to an undisclosed location “for a week to kind of think it through.”
He confessed that he was “really, really struggling.” Jamie East, the host, said, “I think the reality of what it can end up being like if you become that famous is known and understood a bit better now by the new generation.”
However, Cowell felt that the newer generation is more on the “crazy” side because he feels that everyone “wants to be famous right now.” He cited the example of the number of videos that are being uploaded on different social media platforms.
Simon Cowell Wants to Help New Generation Artists to Cope With Stress
In the same episode of the Tales from the Celebrity Trenches podcast, Simon Cowell stated that the new generation of artists wants to be “well known for different reasons.” He undertook the responsibility of guiding them to be successful.
He also stated that if push came to shove and they underwent a stressful time, he would help them prepare for it. Cowell added, “I'll be there if you need me.” His words showcase how devastated he was by the demise of Liam Payne.
But more importantly, during his one-week disappearance, he would have vowed to himself that he would not let an artist lose their life over struggles and addiction. Perhaps one of the reasons Cowell works so closely with the young artists in the Netflix show is that he had also discovered a teenage Liam Payne on the renowned show X Factor.
