'I Didn’t Dare Act Like That': Nicki Minaj Reveals Why She Kept Her Donald Trump Support a 'Secret'
Nicki Minaj is speaking more candidly than ever regarding her support for President Donald Trump and the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.
She revealed that she feared facing backlash, which stopped her from publicly sharing her views.
In a recent interview with TIME, published on Thursday, May 14, the rapper shared that even though she had privately supported Trump for a while, she felt pressurized to remain quiet due to the political atmosphere in the entertainment industry.
Minaj said, “I felt that way already about him, just that I didn’t dare act like that publicly. It’s been ingrained in everyone’s brain in the music business that we are supposed to be a Democratic family. I just knew they would not like me supporting Trump. Hopefully, when they see me and hear me speak and feel my energy, that will make them say, 'You know what: Who am I afraid of? What am I afraid of?"

'Many Celebrities Feel the Way I Do, But They Don't Say It'
Calling herself the "catalyst" for the change, Minaj stressed that many celebrities feel the way like her about Trump but don't say it publicly.
"Many celebrities feel the way I do, but they don’t say it. Sometimes you just need one brave person to get the brunt of the impact. I think I am the catalyst for that change. Hopefully, when they see me and hear me speak and feel my energy," she remarked.
"It's the same way Marilyn Monroe represents a vibe. Donald Trump is his own vibe," she said.
Nicki Minaj Says Gavin Newsom 'Completely Ignored' Her
The Super Bass singer stated that Governor Gavin Newsom might have inadvertently pushed her to support Trump after he “completely ignored” her requests for help in safeguarding her Beverly Hills home.
Minaj revealed that she contacted Newsom via the social media platform X and through intermediaries after multiple swatting events at her home in 2022 and 2023, but he never replied.
Nicki Minaj stated that she was pushed to support Donald Trump all the more after Gavin Newsom 'completely ignored' her.
Minaj stated that's when Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna came forward and helped connect her with law enforcement authorities and a private security company to stop the swatting incidents.
"He just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes," Minaj recalled, referring to Newsom.
Thanking Luna, the singer said, "I was shocked. I’d never seen anyone in politics treat me that way. That’s what made me say that I don’t care to keep this a secret anymore."
'I Am Probably the President's No. 1 Fan'
At Turning Point USA's AmericaFest in 2025, Minaj publicly showed her support for Trump and Vice President JD Vance. She made a surprise appearance at the event and called Trump "handsome," according to People.
She said, "Dear young men, you have amazing role models like our handsome, dashing president. And you have amazing role models like the assassin, JD Vance."
Further, Minaj praised Trump at the Trump Accounts Summit in Washington, D.C., which took place on January 28, 2026. Calling herself Trump's "no.1 fan," the rapper remarked, "I am probably the president's No. 1 fan, and that's not going to change."
"The hate — or what people have to say — it does not affect me at all. It actually motivates me to support him more. And it's going to motivate all of us to support him more. We're not going to let them get away with bullying him. He has a lot of force behind him, and G-d is protecting him," she said.
