Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene accused Rep. Mike Lawler of secretly mocking President Donald Trump while later pretending to be a strong supporter after Trump returned to power.
Greene made this claim during a Wednesday appearance on The Tucker Carlson Show. She criticized Lawler, a Republican from New York, and other Republicans for changing their stance on Trump for political gain. “He hated Donald Trump, made fun of him constantly, mimicking him and mocking his voice,” Greene said, according to the interview reports.
MTG says Mike Lawler is not MAGA behind the scenes.
Greene also pointed out that Lawler criticized her on the House floor for supporting Trump after the 2020 election loss.
She said Lawler would “come and find me on the House floor” to mock her for backing Trump before the 2024 election cycle shifted the political landscape in the Republican Party.
“He used to attack me, make fun of me, come and find me on the House floor, and ridicule me for supporting Donald Trump,” Greene said.
Greene claimed that Lawler changed his tone after Trump secured the Republican nomination in 2024. She started calling him “MAGA Mike Lawler” because, in her view, he became one of Trump’s most visible defenders.
“I saw this unbelievable change in him,” Greene said. “All of a sudden, Mike Lawler, I started joking. I called him MAGA Mike Lawler because he was suddenly becoming Trump’s biggest supporter.”
Greene mentioned that Lawler once showed her a red MAGA hat signed by Trump and later displayed a large gold challenge coin he claimed came from the president.
MTG accuses Lawler of serving the interest of Israel.
She said these moments illustrated how Republicans who once mocked Trump had gained access to him while some of his longtime supporters were pushed aside.
Lawler, who represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, has publicly supported Trump multiple times throughout his career. The Daily Beast reported that he served as a delegate at the 2016 Republican National Convention and worked on direct mail efforts for Trump’s first presidential campaign through his consulting firm. Trump also endorsed Lawler in a competitive House race, calling him a “true America First patriot.”
Greene’s comments came as she continued to criticize Trump and certain parts of the Republican Party after her falling out with the president. She was once one of Trump's most prominent supporters in Congress but later disagreed with him on foreign policy, the handling of Jeffrey Epstein-related files, and domestic priorities.
In December, Greene told CBS’ 60 Minutes that some Republican lawmakers privately mocked Trump before getting closer to him when he became the party’s 2024 nominee. The Guardian and Time reported that Greene said lawmakers feared public backlash from Trump and his supporters if they broke away from him.
Greene has also criticized Trump, and other conservatives over foreign policy and the direction of the Republican Party.
Carlson has publicly disagreed with Trump, mainly regarding Trump’s Iran policy and what Carlson sees as a departure from America First promises.
Lawler has gained attention in Congress as a Republican from a competitive New York district. He has worked with Democrats on state and local tax deduction issues, a priority for many constituents in high-tax areas.
He has defended Trump at times while separating himself from some of the president’s comments.
Greene stated that Lawler’s public support for Trump did not match what she observed in private.
