GOP Strategist's research might bring bad news for JD Vance
GOP Strategist Warns JD Vance's Political Future Is Looking Uncertain as Voters Drift Toward Marco Rubio
A Republican strategist's research suggests JD Vance's political prospects may be dimming. Not only this but the results of this research also hints that his presidential dreams might also be miserably crushed.
The GOP strategist Sarah Longwell appeared on the Pod Save America on Sunday, April 26, 2026 and shared her viewpoints that she garnered through many weekly focus groups with the voters.
The strategist often discusses her findings on her political podcast, The Focus Group and also publishes The Bulwark which is a conservative news site that often scrutinizes the actions of Donald Trump.
Strategist’s Research is Not Favorable for JD Vance

Longwell told Pod Save America host Tommy Vietor that her research involved asking Trump voters, whom they would like to see run the Republican Party in 2028 and the end result was not so favorable for Vance.
According to Longwell's research, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is currently favored among Republican voters. Sarah Longwell revealed that many MAGA voters have viewed Rubio as a “stabilizing force” compared to the other people in the Trump administration including the Vice President.
Because of his expanded role in the administration, Rubio has earned the nickname "Secretary of Everything." Not only this but he became the first person since Henry Kissinger to serve simultaneously as the Secretary of State and the National Security Advisor.
Marco Rubio might Spoil JD Vance’s Presidential Dreams
The Leading Report poll results showed JD Vance leading over Marco Rubio.
Rubio also played a role in Venezuela-related diplomatic efforts and resigned as acting U.S. archivist in February 2026.
Speaking about voter sentiment toward Rubio, Longwell told the podcast's audience, “I think what people are taking away from that is like, there is one person in this administration who’s not a total clown. And so you gotta give him all the jobs because he’s the only actual serious person. ”
Longwell added that the voters rather had a not-so-pleasant approach towards JD Vance. The GOP strategist hinted that her research allows her to track the popularity levels of different political candidates and things do not look very fruitful for the Vice President.
Talking about the same, Sarah Longwell said, “He’s got total Ron DeSantis vibes from Republican voters. The longer they look at it, the more they’re like, Eh. They want to like him... but he’s not lighting anybody up.”
The comparison is notable given that DeSantis was once widely seen as Trump's heir apparent after he emerged victorious in a re-relection in 2022 as the Florida governor.
However, his relationship with the president deteriorated and DeSantis established his own campaign in May 2023 where pitched himself as a conservative alternative to Donald Trump and the latter also took a dig at him by calling him, “Ron DeSanctimonious.”
DeSantis withdrew from the race and endorsed Trump revealing that he realized that the Republican voters “want to give Donald Trump another chance”.
According to reports, some of the president's top advisers are said to favor Rubio for the 2028 Republican nomination — a development that sources say could complicate Vance's path.
