Erika Kirk accepted honorary degrees from Hillsdale College for herself and her late husband, Charlie Kirk.

This decision drew criticism from opponents who highlighted Charlie's years of attacks on higher education and his 2022 book, The College Scam.

Kirk, the CEO of Turning Point USA, received an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree during Hillsdale College’s 174th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 9.

She also accepted a posthumous honorary degree for Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who founded Turning Point USA and died in September 2025.

Erika received backlash for accepting an honorary degree.

The ceremony sparked an online debate about whether these honors conflicted with her husband’s public stance on college.

Charlie often urged young people to explore trade schools, apprenticeships, and other options outside traditional four-year colleges. OK! Magazine reported that critics labeled Erika “tone-deaf” and accused her of hypocrisy for accepting degrees from a college.

Supporters of Charlie Kirk countered that his criticisms mostly targeted what he viewed as liberal influence, student debt, and poor returns on investment at many universities, not Hillsdale.

The Michigan liberal arts college has long associated itself with conservative politics and classical education. It claims not to accept federal or state taxpayer subsidies, including indirect aid through student grants or loans.

Before the ceremony, Hillsdale announced that Erika Kirk would speak to the Class of 2026. In the announcement, the college identified her as the CEO and chair of Turning Point USA, roles she assumed after her husband’s death.

Erika Kirk pays tribute to her late husband during her acceptance speech.

It noted she holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and international relations from Arizona State University and a Juris Master in American legal studies from Liberty University.

“It is a great honor to be invited to speak at the Hillsdale College Graduation Ceremony on May 9,” Erika Kirk said in the college’s announcement. “Charlie loved Hillsdale deeply and was often a grateful student of its online courses.”

Hillsdale President Larry P. Arnn had previously stated that the school would award honorary degrees to both Kirks after speaking at Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in Glendale, Arizona, on September 21.

Arnn noted that Kirk had completed many Hillsdale online courses and would send him certificates after finishing them.

“We are going to give Charlie and Erika the greatest respect a college can give: an honorary degree,” Arnn said during the memorial remarks published by Hillsdale.

However, the award still faced criticism due to Charlie Kirk’s sustained campaign against mainstream higher education.

OK! Magazine reported that social media users argued the degree undermined the Kirks’ message about college and questioned why honorary doctorates should go to individuals who had criticized the value of degrees.

Kirk addressed Hillsdale graduates in a commencement speech focusing on faith, civic duty, family, and her husband’s legacy. She encouraged graduates to pursue lives centered on purpose and commitment rather than comfort.

The college also recognized Joseph A. Banach, Stephen “Tony” Batman, and Eleanor E. Flack among this year’s honorary degree recipients. Previous recipients include Justice Clarence Thomas, Bishop Robert Barron, Edwin J. Feulner, Patrick and Lesly Sajak, and Victor Davis Hanson.

This dispute marked another public challenge for Erika Kirk as she continues leading Turning Point USA after her husband’s death.
