Anna Wintour is making headlines for her alleged subtle dig at Melania Trump during a recent conversation. The longtime veteran editor teamed up with Meryl Streep for Vogue’s latest cover story, ahead of her film’s release, The Devil Wears Prada 2. The conversation was moderated by filmmaker Greta Gerwig, known for films like Barbie and Little Women. During the conversation, Wintour reflected on how women in power use fashion to express themselves.

According to The Blast, Anna Wintour was asked about her views on whether women’s clothing plays a role in expressing power. She praised figures like Michelle Obama while disagreeing with the belief that authority must come with a uniform. She said, “I don’t think wearing a power suit to the office is in any way necessary.” Some interpreted the statement as a subtle dig at the first lady Melania Trump, who often opts for tailored and structured looks.

Keeping her remarks brief about the FLOTUS, she added, “To be fair, Melania Trump also always looks like herself when she dresses.” Notably, the comment that seemed neutral stood out because of its tone.

Social media users were quick to notice the difference in her enthusiastic praise for Obama and Rama compared to the bland remark for Melania. A fan shared old pictures of Wintour hanging out with the Trumps and wrote, “Interesting that she was fine with Melania's fashion before 2016.”

She also expressed admiration for New York City’s new first lady, Rama Duwaji, believing that she has a cool style mixed with a lot of vintage pieces that still feel fresh, modern and completely herself.

Contributing to the conversation, Meryl Streep underlined subtle messaging through fashion. She explained her point by pointing out one of Melania’s most iconic fashion moments of 2018 when she wore a jacket while visiting migrants detention center. The text on the back read, “ I Really Don’t Care. Do U?” which was interpreted as an instant retort to criticism. Streep said, “I have so many thoughts about this,” further adding that the jacket sent a powerful message during a highly sensitive visit.

Tensions between Melania and Wintour date back years. Melania appeared on Vogue’s page in 2005 after her wedding to Donald Trump, but she was never featured again, even during her first time in office. In 2022, Melania openly questioned why she was never featured on the magazine’s page during her time in the office, despite other political figures like former first lady Jill Biden getting different treatment.

According to reports, the 55-year-old offered a scathing remark highlighting their double standards as she said, “They’re biased, and they have likes and dislikes, and it’s so obvious. And I think the American people and everyone see it.” At the time, she argued that it was their decision and, sounding indifferent, she asserted having many more things to do in the White House than being on the cover page of Vogue.
