It appears that quite a few challenges may have piled up in front of President Donald Trump ahead of the mid-term elections, scheduled to be held in November 2026.

Recent surveys have shown that Trump's approval rating has significantly plummeted in recent months, even among the Gen Z voters.

Now, in a recent move, six Republican lawmakers have gone against the president to support a vote on immigration.

This decision helped push a plan that could protect around 350,000 Haitians living in the United States by giving them Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the next three years.

TPS usually allows people from countries facing serious issues -- like violence or natural disasters -- to stay and work in the U.S. safely.

'Too Dangerous for American Citizens to Go to Haiti'

Rep. Don Bacon shares his views about TPS status for Haitians.

This rare GOP split over Trump's immigration policy comes after both Democrats and Republicans supported the new bill introduced by Rep. Laura Gillen and Rep. Michael Lawler.

This new bill could provide Haitians with TPS for three more years.

According to reports, this program is aimed to help people stay in the U.S. if their home country is deemed unsafe.

The vote marks the first time since Trump returned to office that Republicans have gone against the president on immigration policy.

Lawler explained why he crossed the aisle to go against Trump's immigration policy. “I have one of the largest Haitian populations in the country in my district,” he told the Washington Post.

“If you end [temporary protections] without addressing work authorization, it will cause a huge crisis in our health care system, especially in an area like mine, where a lot of our Haitian TPS holders are nurses,” Lawler added.

Gillen offered similar reasoning behind her decision. According to NBC News, she said on the House floor, “The State Department claims it is too dangerous for American citizens to go to Haiti because of kidnapping, gang violence and widespread chaos, but yet, the administration has said it's safe for Haitians to return there."

She further mentioned that “removing our neighbors would not just be a humanitarian catastrophe; it would hurt our economy."

In addition, Gillen noted that Haitian immigrants "work in critical sectors like health care, education, caregiving, supporting our elderly and working in local hospitals.”

Ayanna Pressley Expresses Gratitude to Republican Colleagues

Rep. Ayanna Pressley calls for the extension of TPS for Haitians in the U.S., in a post on X.

While the bill has been pushed to protect thousands of Haitians living in the United States, the measure was originally accelerated using a special process called a discharge petition by Rep. Ayanna Pressley, a Democrat from Massachusetts and co-chair of the House Haiti Caucus.

“This is a critical step forward in our fight for immigrant justice and delivering our Haitian neighbors the protections they deserve — and it’s a testament to the strength of our broad, diverse and bipartisan coalition,” Pressley said, further expressing gratitude toward her Republican colleagues.

Meanwhile, Trump has openly criticized the legislation. Taking to his Truth Social account, he shared a video of a Haitian man assaulting a woman at a gas station and blamed Democrats, “Deranged Liberal District Court Judges” and former President Joe Biden's administration for supporting such policies.

“This animal was allowed to stay here because the Biden Administration granted him, and all Haitians, ‘Temporary Protective Status,’ a massively abused and fraudulent program which my Administration is working to terminate, but Deranged Liberal District Court Judges are standing in our way.” the president wrote.
