'You Don't Have It': Gavin Newsom Taunts JD Vance While Mocking Trump's 'Cult of Personality'

The long-standing political feud between California Governor Gavin Newsom and President Donald Trump flared up once again after Newsom delivered a scathing critique of the MAGA movement.

Newsom mocked Trump's political durability, claiming that the president possesses a unique personality that is required to keep his political movement alive, meaning no prospective successor will be able to replicate it.

The California governor then shifted his focus to Vice President JD Vance, arguing that while Vance has the ideas of the president, he fundamentally lacks the president's personality.

The remarks quickly caught the attention of netizens, sparking speculations ahead of the 2028 presidential campaign.

Newsom recently appeared as a guest on MS NOW’s Center for American Progress IDEAS Conference 2026 to talk about the current political landscape of America.

Confronted with a question regarding how the United States should seek to rebuild its trust with allied nations and restore long-term confidence in its global leadership, the interviewer noted that numerous international heads of state had been raising similar issues as well.

The question prompted a chuckle from the California governor, who said, "America is not.. its, you know.. just a situational leader. Trump’s temporary, he is..," Newsom told the audience.

Newsom defended his high-profile international travel, explaining that his attendance at both the World Economic Forum in Davos and the Munich summit served California's interests.

"California is permanent," Newsom stated, assuring that they will rebuild global trust with an open hand rather than a closed fist.

Newsom joked that the bar will be set low for the next president and administration. Slamming the Trump administration, he said, “Trump is an invasive species. I don’t see Trumpism lasting beyond Trump, period, full stop. It's a cult of personality.”

Turning his attention to the vice president, Newsom added, “With all due respect, JD, you don't have it,” drawing cheers and applause from the conference attendees.

The governor concluded by warning that widespread public anxiety and pessimism regarding the current political trajectory are steadily building toward a major detonation.

Newsom then clipped his "Trumpism" commentary and uploaded the video to his social media handles.
