'You Can't Just Pigeonhole Them': Michelle Obama Warns Liberals Against Labeling Trump Voters as 'Racist'
Former First Lady Michelle Obama reflected on the state of American democracy and the economic anxieties driving working-class voters during an interview on Monday, May 18.
Appearing as a guest on the Talk Easy With Sam Fragoso podcast, Obama discussed public polarization following the 2024 presidential elections.
She urged against broad characterizations of voters who support President Donald Trump, arguing that political alignments are frequently rooted in economic vulnerability rather than personal animosity.
The former first lady called on people to refrain from labeling Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters as "racist."
'This Is an Act of I Don't Know What Else to Do'

During the podcast, host Sam Fragoso questioned Obama on whether she observed structural shifts in American society during Trump’s first and second terms at the Oval Office.
“I was deeply, deeply disappointed,” she replied.
Obama said, “That outcome had as much to do with people's pain and confusion about where they are in their lives.”
She explained that democracy is not complete for people across various social classes and that it sometimes does not work out in their favor.
“I've seen it all. I've experienced it all,” the former first lady remarked.
She said that she showed empathy to the people who are "underestimated" and "underinvested" in.
Obama claimed that such discrimination occurs more frequently as the “income gap is widened.” Consequently, more people are becoming its victims as this gap continues to expand, she stated.
The former first lady recalled her childhood, stating that her father never managed to get hired.
However, she noted that her family never had to worry about their rent, and that they had health care, and her father managed to send them to college despite it being expensive.
“The basics. More Americans had more of the basics. And that's becoming less and less. And my gosh, when you don't have a chance..,” she said.
She explained that there are countless people like her father who are unemployed and belong to different races and ethnicities.
Obama remarked that being unemployed makes these people angry, and then they start finding someone to blame.
Instead of blaming government officials, they blame the people who elected Trump, Obama said.
“You can't just pigeonhole them and say you just don't care and you're racist or whatever you're thinking,” she said, adding, “This is an act of I don't know what else to do.”
She expressed hope that America’s next leader would take initiatives to improve life for the middle and working classes.
“It's not me anymore, but I know those folks, and they're good people, and they don't have a way out, and that makes for bad choices,” Obama said.
Michelle Obama Believes America Is in Its 'Janky Era'
During an episode of the IMO podcast, Obama said she believed that there are multiple versions of the Land of Opportunity, where the newer version will not make its predecessor appear bad. She also claimed that it was “necessary for growth.”
The 62-year-old said, “I think we're in just a janky version.”
“I'm kind of digging the way folks are beginning to respond, right? I mean, Minnesota, powerful stuff,” she added.
She also referred to the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti and the public demonstration against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for their alleged unlawful discharge of force.
"I mean, it was a powerful reminder of what a community of people can do and are willing to do to protect one another. You know, when you're not so janky,” Obama stated.
