Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel was recently sued by three former agents of the bureau. The spotlight now seems to have shifted to a different case as on Wednesday, April 8, Patel revealed that a former military employee has been arrested for leaking classified government information to the press.

The suspect has been identified as Courtney Williams, who once worked with a special operations unit and had access to highly sensitive information. Officials said she shared secret information with the press, thus committing a crime. A federal grand jury has now charged her, and a case has been set in motion.

Courtney Williams Indicted for Allegedly Sharing Classified Information

Williams, a former employee of the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM), was identified as the suspect by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

She was indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday, April 8, for holding a Top Secret and Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from 2010 to 2016.

Reflecting on the case, Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenberg said that people with such clearance have a serious duty to protect classified information. Yet, as Williams broke that trust which allegedly harmed the country’s safety, strict action will now be taken against her, without exception.

“Clearance holders accept a solemn obligation to protect the classified information entrusted to them," Eisenberg said. "That they do so is critical to the security of our nation. When clearance holders violate that trust, the National Security Division will act swiftly to hold them accountable,” he added.

Meanwhile, court documents claim that Williams shared sensitive information with a journalist between 2022 and 2025, which violated the federal law.

Investigators also revealed that Williams and the journalist had a total of 10 hours of phone conversations and exchanged more than 180 messages.

Kash Patel confirms former SOCOM employee Courtney Williams' arrest in a post on X.

Following investigations and legal proceedings surrounding Williams, the arrest was made with the help of several agencies, Patel confirmed. The FBI chief thanked the Justice Department, the FBI's Charlotte office, and the FBI Counterintelligence & Espionage Division for their work.

“FBI and our partners have arrested a former SOCOM employee, who supported our top-level military warfighters, for allegedly transmitting classified information to a member of the media," Patel wrote on X.

"Let this serve as a message to any would-be leakers: we're working these cases, and we're making arrests," he added.

He continued, "This FBI will not tolerate those who seek to betray our country and put Americans in harm's way.”

While stating that Williams is accused of sharing classified information with a journalist, Patel explained how such actions can put national security at risk. He then concluded by warning others who might think about leaking sensitive information.
