Why King Charles Avoided Prince Harry During U.S. Trip
King Charles III and his wife are currently enjoying their tour to the U.S. to strengthen ties between the two countries. But even though the British monarch and his on are now on the same continent, he will not meet with Prince Harry.
The decision not to meet with his youngest is twofold. The trip is mainly to focus on diplomatic ties and prioritizing the current event as such remains the most important factor. The other reason that they're not meeting up, is because of the reported tension in the family.
Why no reunion during US visit
Trump and King Charles shake hands.
The British royals have scheduled a four day trip to the U.S. which ends on April 30 because they want to help strengthen American and British ties. According to USA Today, Charles and Camilla will be attending engagements with Donald Trump and Melania as they reinforce the relationship.
Buckingham Palace clarified that the trip is to "celebrate the historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship” between the two nations, as American marks its 250th year of independence. The king and his consort are showing their support for one of their biggest allies through the years.
Royal commentators say that if Prince Harry and King Charles had to meet, it would draw attention away from the diplomatic aims of the trip. As media producer John McDermott explained, "One of the complications is if Charles did meet with Harry, it overshadows the whole trip, and the point of the trip is the state visit.”
He added that if there was a father-son reunion that it could create “competing narratives.” He also noted, “This week’s agenda is Charles and Camilla, and again, if you meet with Harry, that becomes the story.”
A relationship still under strain
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal life in 2020, and set up a new life in California. Since then, he and his wife have added another child to the mix, done numerous interviews, and Harry published the controversial Spare which provides his version of what life as a royal is like.
Every now and then, Harry has also made the trip to the UK as family matters arose, but the father and son haven't fully reconciled. Apparently, both parties are willing to make peace.
In a 2025 interview, Harry said that he "would love a reconciliation" after his dad's cancer diagnosis. At the time he added that he does "not know how much longer my father has."
And while Harry and Charles may be eager to reconcile, things may not be that simple to do. "Charles would like to reconcile with his son, of course, as a father and a son, and Harry would like to be closer with his father, and then somewhere in the middle is William’s opinion,” McDermott said.
Prince William may not yet be open to the idea of reconciliation.
Optics, timing and future pressure
Prince William and Prince Harry are reportedly at loggerheads.
Another reason why the royals may not be meeting is optics. If King Charles met with his son, it could appear as if Harry now has a tie-in with the monarchy again.
"The fear is simple: Harry doesn’t just get a private moment with his father — he gets fresh royal legitimacy,” one source said,
