Representative Ilhan Omar has often been sharply criticized by the Republicans, especially by President Donald Trump. Though he will call her out with various reasons, he will often repeat an old claim of marrying her brother.
While proof has often fallen short of these empty claims, the rumors keep resurfacing as Omar’s ties with her brother remain unclear. Consequently, causing the unclear claims to come up time and again, dating all the way back to 2016.
Ilhan Omar’s Unfounded Relationship With Her Brother
President Donald Trump shams Ilhan Omar's marriage.
Ilhan Omar has been in the crosshairs of President Trump, and during a speech (via X), he talked about the Somali fraud in Minnesota. He stated that Somalia is the worst country in the world, and the Somalians went to Minnesota and stole $19 billion. He continued belittling them, claiming they are “low IQ people” and are “bad people.”
He then turned his attention to the US Representative, claiming that she “married her husband to married her brother. Her brother became her husband.” A report by Snopes stated that the rumors first surfaced in 2016, when an anonymous user posted on SomaliSpot, in a now-deleted discussion that Ilhan Omar was involved in marriage and immigration fraud.
The post mentioned, “Omar married Ahmed Hirsi in 2002. Hirsi is the father of Omar's three children. Omar is depicted with Hirsi and their children on Omar's campaign website here.” However, in 2009, she married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, her brother, who started his university education at North Dakota State University, where Omar had graduated from.
The outlet did not find any credible evidence that Elmi and Omar were siblings and were involved in a fraudulent marriage. Additionally, they pointed out that Omar and all of her siblings had arrived in the United States with refugee statuses, where she was a minor, when she arrived in the country, eventually becoming a naturalized US citizen.
Ilhan Omar Addresses Rumored Marriage With Her Brother
During an exclusive interview with Fox 9, Ilhan Omar discussed the rumors lingering on the internet about her controversial marriage. She slammed the allegation as “absolutely false and ridiculous,” and offered clarification by sharing her personal history.
She stated that she had applied for a marriage license in 2002, with Ahmed Hirsi, whom she publicly calls her husband, but they could never finalize the application and were never legally married, ending their relationship in 2008.
She added that in 2009, she legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen. She claimed that the Conservatives alleged that the man was her brother, and it was a “potential sham marriage to help the brother with immigration into the United States.”
Omar added, “Insinuations that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is my brother are absurd and offensive.” Moreover, she confirmed in the statement that she was married in her faith and is raising their family together.
