Donald Trump’s recent remarks about rising Hantavirus cases have raised concerns.
‘Under Control’: Trump Addresses Rising Hantavirus Cases in U.S.; Netizens Express Concern
Amid the rise in Hantavirus cases in the U.S., President Donald Trump addressed the situation during a press briefing on Thursday, May 7.
Speaking with the media, Trump said that he has been briefed about the recent cases and assured the public that the situation is currently “under control.”
Trump was asked by reporters whether Americans should be worried about the disease spreading across the country.
In response, the president said, “I hope not,” while adding that his administration would “do the best we can” to handle the situation.
'It Should Be Fine, We Hope'
Donald Trump addresses concerns regarding the Hantavirus outbreak.
Speaking to reporters in Washington, D.C., near the Lincoln Memorial, Trump was asked about the hantavirus outbreak in America.
The president said, “It's very much, we hope, under control. It was the ship, and I think we're going to make a full report about it tomorrow.”
Trump added, “We have a lot of people.. a lot of great people, are studying it. It should be fine, we hope.”
Following his comments, when the 79-year-old was asked whether Americans should be worried about the disease spreading, Trump reiterated, “I hope not.”
He then stated, “We’ll do the best we can.”
Yet, his response has raised eyebrows among netizens.
So far, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified the hantavirus outbreak as a “Level 3” emergency response, the lowest emergency activation level.
This comes after the World Health Organization (WHO) reported the outbreak involving the Andes strain, which has resulted in five confirmed cases and three deaths linked to a ship voyage.
Social Media Users React to Trump's Remarks
Trump’s response to the Hantavirus outbreak has sparked concern online.
Social media users are now questioning the government’s response to the situation, as Trump appeared seemingly unfazed.
One user wrote, “Glossing over something like this with a minimum concern after Covid seems irresponsible, dismissive, and suspicious.”
Another added, “That seems like a whole lot of “hoping” for something that can wipe out 40%.”
An individual commented, “If Trump is saying it is in control… Believe me, it’s not.”
“If it’s really about Hantavirus infection, then 'we hope it’s under control' isn’t enough. People need clear data, transparency, and prevention steps, not just optimism,” one user stated.
The reactions come after the New York Times reported how the Trump administration has made staffing cuts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health agencies, and proposed eliminating about $750 million in preparedness grants.
As a result of these staffing reductions, the government now has fewer workers available to handle disease outbreaks.
There are a lesser number of field investigators, contractors, and senior officials responsible for coordinating emergency responses nationwide.
In addition, after Trump withdrew the U.S. from the WHO, the country no longer receives regular updates from other nations about new and emerging global health threats.
Thus, the Centers for Disease Control is facing a delay in setting up a team to respond to the outbreak.
