President Donald Trump has been accused of crushing a little girl’s dream after telling her at a White House youth fitness event that soccer “might be better” for her.
The viral remark came after she told the president that she plays volleyball and is interested in getting into soccer during the summer.
The interaction happened during an Oval Office event related to Trump’s initiative to bring back the Presidential Fitness Test.
President Trump tells young girl she's not tall enough for volleyball.
This program focuses on physical fitness for students and is part of a renewed emphasis on youth sports. Trump interacted with students and professional athletes at the event, including golfers Gary Player and Bryson DeChambeau.
In a video from the event, the girl told Trump, “I play volleyball and in the summer I’m trying to get into soccer.”
Trump then asked about her height, saying, “At your height do you smash the ball in the volleyball? Can you jump high?” When she mentioned she struggled with jumping, he responded, “Soccer might be better” and added, “I’m just looking at her, she’d be a great soccer player,” as seen in a clip of the exchange.
The video quickly spread online, leading critics to accuse Trump of mocking the girl and discouraging her athletic ambitions during an event designed to promote fitness and youth sports. Some defended his comment as awkward advice rather than an insult.
This moment was just one of several clips from the White House event that circulated on social media. Trump also made a joke about his own workout routine, telling reporters, “I work out so much. Like about one minute a day, max, if I’m lucky,” according to CSPAN.
The event focused on the administration’s plan to revive the Presidential Fitness Test and related awards for students. The White House stated that Trump signed an executive order to reinvigorate the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition and to restore the Presidential Fitness Test.
This test has historically assessed students through activities such as running, sit-ups, pull-ups or push-ups, shuttle runs, and flexibility exercises. The revival of this program is part of a national effort to promote strength, exercise, and youth sports.
The previous version of the test was phased out over ten years ago, replaced by a program that emphasized personal health markers instead of ranking students by athletic performance.

Trump’s administration has positioned the return to the older model as a move back toward clear fitness standards.
The Oval Office event featured athletes and sports figures who supported the administration’s message on youth fitness. DeChambeau, who leads the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, was among those present.
However, Trump’s exchange with the girl captured much of the attention after the video circulated. Netizens noted the awkward nature of the moment, while critics on social media argued that the president should have encouraged her rather than doubting if her height was suitable for volleyball.
This incident adds to a series of viral moments from Trump’s public appearances with children, where his trademark unfiltered style of communicating and humor was on full display.
The White House has stated that the effort seeks to increase access to wellness, support youth sports, and prioritize fitness nationally.
