You know when you're just cruisin' down the highway and then all of a sudden 15 goats show up? No, we don't either, because that kind of thing doesn't usually happen.

And yet, that's exactly what happened to some presumably puzzled motorists in Maine earlier this year.

State police said that a trailer full of goats detached from a towing truck on the Maine Turnpike (that's what they call the highway there, for some kind of funny reasons), with the animals needing to be corralled as they began obstructing traffic on the road.

Maine State Police shared details of the incident on social media.

"On Saturday, June 14, 2025, at approximately 12:41 PM, Maine State Police Troop G Troopers responded to a report of a trailer carrying goats that had become detached from its towing vehicle on the Turnpike northbound near mile marker 52 in Falmouth. The trailer came to rest in the median," Maine State Police wrote on social media. "As a result of the incident, 15 goats escaped and began to disrupt traffic on both the northbound and southbound lanes. Troopers quickly responded and coordinated efforts to corral the goats."

The post continued, "The investigation determined that the driver, operating a 2013 Toyota pickup truck towing a farm trailer, experienced a disconnection between the vehicle and trailer, leading to the incident. There were no significant injuries to the driver or the goats. Southbound traffic was minimally affected, while northbound traffic was slowed for about 45 minutes but continued to flow."

Gathering up all the runaway goats was a huge job and required a whole bunch of different government agencies to pitch in.

"The Maine State Police were assisted at the scene by Southern Maine Towing, Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency, the Town of Cumberland, Cumberland Police Department Animal Control, and Maine Turnpike Authority maintenance crews," police explained on social media.

"Not baaad Troopers. Not baaad!" quipped one person in the comments section.

"I love our maine state troopers - they get 'er done!" added someone.

"Glad everyone including the goats are alright," said a third person.

And someone else chipped in, "Not all GOATS wear trooper hats but the ones who do save the day!!"

Goats regularly make headlines in Maine, such as the time police were called out to a farm to check out a goat whose bleat sounded like a human screaming.

And last year, a farm in Cumberland held an actual pajama party for their baby goats — a.k.a. the cutest thing you'll see all week.
