President Donald Trump's Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is undergoing a significant change as the acting ICE Director, Todd Lyons, will resign from his position on May 31, 2026. This has hinted at a leadership change, which plays a key role in Trump's mass deportation campaign.
This announcement was made on Thursday, April 16, by DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who recently replaced Kristi Noem. The announcement marked the end of his tumultuous time, which was defined by mass deportations and considerable public dissent. Mullin, in his speech, said, "Thanks to his leadership, American communities are safer."
As reported by CBS, sources familiar with Lyons told the network that Lyons is looking forward to departing from the agency in May to spend more time with his family in Massachusetts. Following his departure from ICE, Lyons would be moving to the private sector, as per the report.

Markwayne Mullin congratulates Lyons for joining private sector
Markwayne Mullin posted on X a long note for Todd Lyons' new journey in the private sector and his contributions as the ICE Director. In his post, he informed that his last working date will be May 31, 2026.
He wrote, "Director Lyons has been a great leader of ICE and key player in helping the Trump administration remove murderers, ra---sts, pe---iles, terrorists, and gang members from American communities."
He further added, "He jump-started an agency that had not been allowed to do its job for four years. Thanks to his leadership, American communities are safer. We wish him luck on his next opportunity in the private sector."
President Trump appointed Todd Lyons as the acting director of the agency in March 2025. He replaced Caleb Vitello, who was moved to another position, as per The Mirror US.
Before joining as acting chief of ICE, Todd Lyons worked as the executive associate director of the agency's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) division, where he managed initiatives to locate, apprehend, and deport undocumented immigrants, as per Reuters.
Todd Lyons' time in DHS was marred by controversies
Todd Lyons' tenure in DHS wasn't easy; it was marked by controversies and crackdowns. During his time in the agency, there was a significant increase in arrests and removals, accompanied by massive criticism regarding aggressive crackdowns, especially in cities governed by Democrats.
Lyons was hospitalized at least twice in the last seven months due to a stress-related issues.
These actions sparked protests and received intense scrutiny after federal agents killed two American citizens in separate events in Minneapolis in January.
White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller praised Lyons and called him a "phenomenal patriot". He said, "He was a phenomenal patriot and dedicated leader who has been at the center of President Trump's historic efforts to secure our homeland and reverse the Democrats' sinister border invasion."
Despite Miller's praiseworthy comments for Lyons, the speculation was rife that Miller contributed to Lyons’ stress, which reportedly led to his hospitalization, per The Mirror. Lyons was hospitalized at least twice in the last seven months due to a stress-related health crisis because of his role.
