A TikToker was in for an unwanted surprise at Goodwill. Hoping to get herself a Labubu doll, she bought an unsuspecting package from the store after checking for its authenticity.
However, upon opening the package, it was not what she had expected. She was not too pleased with what she had found and shared the unboxing video on her TikTok account, showcasing her bemusement with the incident.
What Did the Package Actually Contain?
TikToker Summer Riddell was shocked to find out the contents of her $8 mystery Labubu package that she bought from Goodwill. She took to her TikTok account to share a video that she made while unboxing the package. After removing the seal, Riddell was taken aback by what she found inside the package.
Instead of finding one of the 300 variants of the doll, she found a stuffed package of Quaker Instant Oatmeal inside it. After realizing what was inside the box, she burst into laughter, saying, “Oh my God!” and covered her face with amusement. Her followers did not waste any time expressing their views, as they tried to lighten the mood with friendly banter.
A TikToker found an oatmeal packet inside a mystery Labubu package.
A user commented, “Nothing and I mean nothing could had prepared me for that.” Another user wrote, “When everyone was saying ‘i’ll wait a few years to find them at goodwill’ this is NOT what they meant.” A third user stated, “u have no idea how funny this is at 2am.”
One user mentioned, “Atleast you know what you’re having for breakfast tomorrow.” Another joked, “YOU HAVE THE ONE AND ONLYYYY QUAKERSSS OATS LABUBUUUUUU.” A person added, “That is unironically the best flavor Quaker Oatmeal, you kinda came up.”
As part of the caption of the TikTik video, Riddell wrote that before buying the mystery box, she had verified its authenticity by scanning the QR code on the box. However, she had her initial doubts about the authenticity of the product. Nevertheless, she used this incident as a cautionary tale for others, urging them to carefully verify their items before purchasing them from a thrift store.
Scammers Target ‘Desperate’ Labubu Fans
Notably, Summer Riddell is not the first person to get scammed with a fake Labubu package, as fraudsters have, for some time, been targeting people who are looking to buy Labubu toys. According to a report by KWCH, Tristan Gomes, an official from the Better Business Bureau, shed light on the scam.
Gomes claimed that the scammers are looking for “desperate” people who want to get their hands on their first Labubu doll. The scammers are selling them “counterfeit products or just setting up fake websites that never deliver anything.” The warning signs came after it was noticed that the demand for the doll had skyrocketed.
Consequently, a secondary market has been created where some websites are selling the original versions for an inflated price. What makes it surprising is that people are willingly paying hundreds of dollars more to these websites, while the retail price of the doll is only $30.
