The No. 5-seed Maryland women's basketball team lost 74-66 to No.4 North Carolina on Sunday, March 22, marking the end of their March Madness tournament run before cementing a spot in the Sweet 16 — a development that has happened only once before in five seasons.

But the Maryland-UNC match will most likely be remembered for a heated moment early in the second half, when head coach Brenda Frese had an intense exchange with star guard Oluchi Okananwa.

‘I Need You To Lock In’

The incident played out when Frese, a veteran coach, approached Okananwa with visible intensity. According to the Irish Star, the 22-year-old junior transfer had just committed a travel violation, missed a layup and failed to convert multiple free throws in a row, as Maryland fell into a double-digit deficit.

Known for her demanding style, Frese delivered a blunt message, which lip readers later interpreted as: "I need you to lock in, stop being distracted, right. I believe in you, but you've got to want this moment."

Social Media Reacts to Frese and Okananwa's Heated Interaction

The moment between the NCAA women's basketball player and her head coach went viral on social media platforms, drawing mixed reactions from sports enthusiasts and netizens. While many supported the coach's tough-love approach, others questioned it. "Totally uncalled for," wrote one user on X. Another added, "Calm down now."

However, many were impressed by the moment, and even supported Frese's reaction to the Nigerian-American basketballer. "Watched this countless times. If only we experienced this in football," wrote one user on X. "That's a coach right there," said another person. "The only people that will have problems with this have never played competitive sports," said a third, reposting the widely circulated clip.

Taking that level of heat from a legendary coach and staying focused shows exactly why she's a star in the making! BIAFRANS to the world," commented one user. "Benchmark response; this is what will set her apart," another user noted.

‘I Love To Be Coached Hard,’ Says Okananwa

Following the match, Okananwa addressed the tense moment with Frese. Speaking to reporters, she explained that she loves to be "coached hard." "Coach understands that I'm a competitor at heart," the star player said, adding, "I've told her this before, and I'll keep on telling her this until forever: I love to be coached hard. And that's what she does with me every single day.”

"Really, what that was was a re-group moment for me and her telling me she believed in me. Because sometimes that's all you need to hear," Okananwa went on. "I feel like after that conversation, that's when I really went back out and just did what I had to do for my team at that moment. I'm forever appreciative of that," she further added.

After scoring just six points in the first half, Okananwa turned things around in the second, putting up 15 points after Frese's message. She finished the game with six rebounds and two steals, shooting 9-18 from the field.
