Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show aired its final episode on May 21.

CBS claimed that the cancellation was due to financial reasons, which ultimately forced them to shut down the iconic show.

However, a veteran reporter has stated that the cited explanation from the channel was a hoax.

He claimed that President Donald Trump allegedly forced the channel to shut down the show after 11 seasons and was involved in preventing it from getting renewed for another season.

On May 23, just two days after the airing of the finale episode of The Late Show, Trump shared an AI-generated video on his X account, which showed him throwing Colbert in a dumpster, closing the lid, and then performing his famous YMCA dance.

Veteran reporter Bill Carter appeared as a guest on MS Now’s The Weekend, sharing his opinion on Trump’s alleged involvement in canceling The Late Show.

Carter said, “Certainly the idea that he throws a man in the dumpster at the end of it indicates that he was personally involved.”

“It’s not a good development for the country, obviously,” he added.

Carter claimed that Trump’s ongoing feud with Colbert was a factor that led the president to cancel the show.

The seasoned journalist said, “The government was pushing to get rid of this man because he was a critic. And, you know, that is so alien to our values.”

Carter said that he believes everybody who has a sense of the current scenario would call it a “bad situation,” and that they have to deal with it on a daily basis.

Interestingly, Trump had also taken a shot at Colbert on May 22, expressing relief that The Late Show was finally over.

He wrote in a post on Truth Social, “Colbert is finally finished at CBS. Amazing that he lasted so long! No talent, no ratings, no life.”

The president called Colbert a “dead person” and claimed that anyone from the streets would be better than the comedian. He concluded in his post, writing, “Thank goodness he’s finally gone!”

'They’re Not Going to Be the Independent Journalism Outfit That They Should Be'

Furthermore, Carter accused CBS of capitulating to the Trump administration, as he did not believe the network’s decision to cancel the show was due to “financial reasons.

He said, “I think CBS, when they capitulated in the lawsuit that Trump filed against ‘60 Minutes,’ was sending a signal that they’re not going to be the independent journalism outfit that they should be.”

Carter opined that by canceling the show, CBS is wiping out the time slot and shifting strategies.

“We’re backing away. We’re giving up on this because maybe it would be too hard to hire somebody who wasn’t going to make jokes about the president,” the journalist added.

Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed — the show replacing The Late Show — has a strictly non-political focus, which media critics allege showcases that CBS did not want trouble with the Trump administration, while the president did not want more criticism of him.
