Savannah Guthrie Faces Growing Pressure As ‘Today’ Ratings Tighten
Savannah Guthrie's new NBC role has some of her colleagues worried about her wellbeing after she took on a new hosting role while still continuing with her job at the popular morning show.
The Today anchor and producer Jimmy Fallon recently announced that Guthrie will be hosting a Wordle game show, that they were both excited about. Fallon praised Guthrie as perfect for the position, but according to Rob Shuter's substack, some colleagues are worried that she may have taken on too much during this difficult period in her life..
Savannah Guthrie’s new NBC role draws attention
Savannah Guthrie will host NBC's new Wordle game show.
“People around Savannah are worried because she never stops,” one insider said. “She’s grieving, she’s under pressure at Today, ratings are tightening, and instead of slowing down she keeps adding more work.”
Ever since Hoda Kotb left the show last year, competition between Today and it's ABC counterpart, Good Morning America, has ramped up. Recently, GMA has been narrowing the gap in the race for ratings.
“NBC desperately needs stability right now,” another source apparently said. “When your biggest star starts branching out this aggressively, people naturally wonder if her focus is shifting away from the show.”
Today has maintained its lead, but during one recent ratings period, it was particularly close. As NBC show struggles to keep the lead, it has added more stress to those working there.
And Guthrie finds herself in this tense atmosphere.
"Today" viewers connected with Hoda Kotb
Hoda Kotb shares how Savannah Guthrie supported her.
According to an earlier Naughty But Nice post, many staff members apparently believe that viewers still link Today with Kotb. She connected with viewers and her leaving the show has left a big gap that they are trying to fill.
“There are constant conversations about Hoda behind the scenes,” one insider said. “A lot of people believe audiences still emotionally connect Today with her.”
Another source added, “The audience connection changed after Hoda left. The big question is whether NBC can fix it before GMA takes the crown.”
At the same time, Guthrie is trying to cope with the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, whose case has gained national attention since she went missing in February.
“Savannah is trying to stay strong on-air, but this has rocked her deeply,” an insider claimed. “Friends think work has become a coping mechanism. She’s filling every empty space with another project.”
Savannah Guthrie remains one of NBC’s biggest stars
Even though her colleagues are worried about her, Guthrie is still highly respected inside NBC and they still see her as one of the most reliable celebrities.
“She’s one of the hardest-working people in television,” a source apparently added. “The fear isn’t that she’ll fail — it’s that she’s carrying too much for too long.”
Guthrie's reputation as a hard worker has those around her rooting for her, but they also know that she can only handle so much.
The new Wordle series, which is based on popular The New York Times' game, is part of the network's attempt to reach families.
NBC has not publicly commented on the claims surrounding Guthrie and Today. But for now, the show continues and Guthrie shoulders on.
